A statistical analysis thread comparing Sarri's first season at Chelsea to Lampard's first season at Chelsea
We'll start off with Goals and XG. Sarri's Chelsea averaged 1.61 goals per game(63) and an XG of 61, while Lampard's Chelsea averaged 1.82 goals per game(69) and an XG of 76(2 per game). Lack of clinicality cost Lampard as Abraham missing 22 big chances was a big factor in this.
In terms of passing, Sarri's Chelsea were slightly superior in having an average pass completion rate of 86.1% as opposed to Lampard's Chelsea completion rate of 84%. Sarri's Chelsea was also superior in terms of progressive distance covered with passes and the total distance.
In terms of goalkeeping, Kepa under Sarri was vastly superior to Kepa under Lampard albeit also below average. Kepa under Sarri's PSXG+/-/SOT was -1.4 while Kepa under Lampard's PSXG+/-/SOT was -9.5. That is perharps partly why Lampard conceded 16 more goals than Sarri.
Defensively, Lampard and Sarri's Chelsea were both similar as Lampard and Sarri both had an XGA of 38 and 39 respectively with Lampard's Chelsea conceding less shots on target although those shots were of higher quality. Kepa was a big factor in Chelsea conceding more goals.(1/2)
In terms of successful pressures, Lampard's Chelsea were superior completing more successful pressures(1919/6208) at a higher rate(30.7%) than Sarri's Chelsea who completed 1795/6254 pressures at a rate of 28.7%. Despite the regular lapses in Lampard's pressing, Lampard's (1/2)
was more effective. In terms of possession, Sarri and Lampard's Chelsea had a similar amount with them having 62.8% and 60.7% possession respectively, with Sarri's Chelsea being slightly more effective with it, averaging more SCA and GCA per 90.
. In terms of discipline, neither Lampard's or Sarri's Chelsea got a red card in their respective seasons.
In terms of overall stats Lampard's Chelsea had more XG, XPts and slightly more XGA than Sarri's Chelsea(41.3). This indicate that Lampard's Chelsea were very unlucky not to finish 2nd and concede less goals than they did with Kepa being the main factor in Chelsea's low position
In conclusion, Sarri's Chelsea and Lampard's Chelsea were incredibly similar in all metrics and both did a good job at Chelsea, considering the squads they had, although Sarri had the better season winning the Europa League while Lampard lost the FA Cup final to Arsenal.
