Whatever laws, restrictions, and guidance the government puts into place, our basic understanding of COVID-19 transmission has not changed in months. We know today what we knew then - COVID-19 is a socially transmitted disease.
Social activity (i.e. spending time with other people physically, in whatever context) raises your risk of catching COVID-19.

The more people you are socially active with, the greater your risk.
Because COVID-19 is socially contagious, when you are socially active with someone, you are in essence being socially active with everyone that they have been recently socially active with.
Anyone can catch COVID-19, and anyone can pass it on.

You can’t tell who has the virus by just looking at them.

An infected person can unknowingly transmit the virus to the people they are socially active with for several days before showing any signs of illness themselves.
The most sure way to avoid catching COVID-19 is to abstain from all social activity.

Unfortunately, social activity is pretty important to human beings. Our economy is built on social activity, it’s good for our mental health, it’s vital for our children.
Thankfully there are some things we can do to protect ourselves.
1. Limit social activity to a small group of people. Your social partners are their social partners.

2. Where possible, be socially active outdoors, if that’s not make sure your indoor space is well ventilated.
3. Social activity doesn’t have to involve physical contact. You can be sociable beyond arms reach.

4. Maintain good hygiene. COVID-19 can be transmitted via surfaces. If you wash your hands frequently, you reduce the risk of picking it up or spreading it.
5. If you have to be socially active with people outside your usual social group - use protection.

A barrier (i.e. a mask) offers you some protection against COVID-19, but it offers more to the people you are being socially active with.
6. Encourage others to wear protection while being socially active. And consider limiting your contact with people who refuse to wear protection around you.

Anyone willing to take part in risky social activity with you is likely to be having risky social activity with others.
Social activity is enjoyable, and for many people vital for their financial and emotional well-being.

But for the time being, we need to socialise responsibly, so please practice safe social. #practicesafesocial
