If we are to co-opt those people for our sense of mythic self-worth, then we should learn the lessons they did. National courage wasn't in short-term survival. It's was in the long-term going without. Austerity with enduring compassion for others. Getting on with it...

...remembering the important stuff after the boredom kicked in. Staying disciplined. Staying our best selves when all else was stripped away.
