A thread, just a little thinking out loud. So,on October 22nd all the companies developing COVID19 vaccines that are in stage 3 trails will meet with Govt. officials (I think the FDA) and report their data to date. If there is vaccine that seems to work, there will be no way 1/10
--they will know of any long term side effects, or truly the efficacy of the vaccine, BUT if something looks promising, and the Trump administration needs to announce a win, they may order emergency approval by the FDA to distribute the vaccine to the public. There is no way 2/10
Astra Zenica, or Pfizer, or Gilead, or Bayer, or any pharmaceutical company is going to do that without immunity from liability for bad side effects. It's already been discussed on Capital Hill. So, you will be asked to take a vaccine, with no assurance it will work, or 3/10
--whether it might hurt or kill you, and with no recourse if it does. Now here's where I'm speculating, but hear me out. A week after the election, the Supreme Court will rule on the ACA, which not only makes insurance companies cover pre-existing conditions, but precludes 4/10
cancellation due to sickness. It is, literally, our only Federal standard for health insurance outside of Medicare. If the ACA is overturned, you may not be covered for any charges you incurred from COVID19, and that's ongoing, even if you recover, given what we now know 5/10
about organ and neurological damage the disease can cause AND if a vaccine is offered to you, and you refuse to take it, it could be the basis for your insurance company to deny your claims for COVID or any associated problem down the road if you recover. I am no anti-vaxer 6/10
by any stretch of the imagination, but I am not going to take a shot of a vaccine when a very high percentage of health and science experts are saying that a safe and effective one can't be properly tested in the time they've allowed. Bottom line, we could have waves --7/10
of medical bankruptcies, people who recover from the disease but lose their home, the ability to work, everything. I'm not taking a stand here, just sending up a flare, I guess. Beware of the quick cure announced in the next month or two, and realize that even if you hate 8/10
Obamacare, if the Supremes overturn it, you may be well and rightly fucked, even if you have good insurance through your work, or you may be compelled to take a vaccine you don't feel safe about in order to be covered.
9/10
I am wide open to more data about this, or corrections to my thinking if you have them. 10/10 @sarahkliff
