It should be concerning that hardly any media has focused on BTS's statements about racism in the US. It's not that media doesn't know -- a new collaboration rumor makes it to mainstream music news in a second. So why not BB or Grammy articles about this? +
On the flip side, had BTS said anything about racism before the #1, "critics" would have accused them of complaining & making excuses. That's what feels personal about this. It's what all minorities are told when calling out systemic racism: "stop complaining, just try harder." +
BTS played the game with Dynamite, and they're very open about it -- the analysis on why it worked in the US, what impact language has, what appeal the genre has... they know. Now, they're using that experience to inform the world about the double standards in the system. +
No artist should need a #1 as "permission" to speak out against these issues. That's the ultimate goal, an industry that's inclusive and unbiased to all. But Dynamite is a massive step towards that goal... it was BTS's social "experiment" of sorts, and wow did it work.
