Looking over the past decade or so it is truly bizarre that many political journalists still think the media's coverage of climate change has served the public well.

Wonder what they think bad coverage would look like.

Would also love to know what they think their role is.
I mean it is 2020. At what point are we going to think... Christ there's been a few IPCC reports... maybe they should frame our coverage instead of LNP says this, ALP said that.. ooh wedgy!
Unbiased/balanced journos SHOULD LOVE climate change reporting.

You have a mass of data and scientific research to use. You can be use facts to balance your reports.

No need for opinion of some talking head.

And yet sigh...
2020 and we are still reporting statements straight about carbon capture that could have been regurgitated verbatim from 2007.
2020 and we still have senior journalists writing about those who want to move to zero emissions as soon as possible as "zealots"
You can still write about politics - see @mrseankelly @latingle and @murpharoo from the weekend. I don't agree with all of their analysis, but it all came from a foundation of THIS IS THE FRICKIN SCIENCE!!
Plenty on this website get stuck into Murph but she more than just about any journo I know thinks about the coverage of this issue.

Disagree with her, think her wrong on Morrison, fine, but she is contemplating what has been done wrong, and what can be changed
So many political journalists don't care. That is the only conclusion I can reach.

They truly don't care about climate change, and think it is just a beat - like oh leave that for the environment reporter.

As though climate change is like negative gearing
But oh well. This is shouting into the void.

I no longer expect anyone to change - mostly I just get unfollowed. Fine. It's only the planet.

The main reason I write for @GuardianAus is it is an outlet that thinks about these things and tries to not just do the same as always
Here's the thing - it is hard to report on this well.

You actually have to read reports, and understand them and be alert to when the PM or someone else says something that doesn't mesh with reality.
Here's the other thing - it's much much easier to just report what was said and say it's unbiased.

And yes you *do* need to report what is said. But come on people. It's been over a decade of the same things being said, can't you just try a bit harder?
Anyway, support the ones who do well. Good journalism is hard and deserves to be paid for.

It's never going to be perfect. You will disagree with it, but that's fine (please leave out the abuse though, it really is incredibly draining to deal with)
Anyway. Just reminder that if things keep going the way they have for the past decade we'll hit 2C by 2038.

I think that matters.

If you don't fine. Just don't come at me with bullshit about how you are a balanced journalist.
