It's that time again: the weekly OSR D&D game night thread here at Altered Worlds Press. Our group last Friday was all-in, consisting of Xull the Barbarian, Bior the Vikink Monk, Fennig the Ranger, Rianorix the Priest, Xandraous the Scout, and Tan Chama the Pyromancer. 1/?
At the end of last week's session the heroes had survived a massive undead brouhaha in a corner of the first level of the Stonehell Megadungeon. Exhausted and laden with treasure, the group decided to head back to town to count their spoils (and XP), have items identified, 2/?
...and heal. As they headed back to the surface, they moved through one large and dusty columns, and found themselves face to face with a dozen or so dogmen. Now, the group's relationship with dogmen at this point has been neutral-to-good, but these dozen looked guilty, 3/?
...as they surrounded some kind of activity and closed ranks so as not to let the heroes see. Rather than pass them by, the group decides to push back, since the yowl of a cat can be heard (Fennig's player said if they were abusing a cat, she would never play D&D again). 4/?
Fennig let fly at the holder of the bag, while others fended of the rest of the (obviously terrified) dogmen, routing them. Only one dogman died in their retreat, and the heroes ended up with a sack, something moving inside... 5/?
Which ended up being a cat chewing on some dead rats. It seems the dogmen were enjoying a cat / rat fight. Surprising the party, Bior casts speak with animals and proceeds to question the cat. He learns that Prince Longpaw (so the tom named itself), taken from the surface, 6/?
had been pitted against a variety of rodents for the enjoyment of the dogmen. The prince deigns to accompany the party to the surface. And so it goes. 7/?
They return, to town after settling Prince Longpaw into the cave they often use for brief rests, where he can go out hunting. The cave had once housed a band of brigands, but is now officially known as Longpaw's Cave.
In town the one major magic item... 8/?

The cultist's staff, is identified as a Staff of the Serpent, a major magic item that Rianorix the Priest is glad to add to his inventory. A few magic potions are also disseminated. Rianorix levels up.
They return to Stonehell, and decide to take the stairs down to level two 9/?

...that they had found in the Quiet Halls. A scythe trap on the stairs springs on Bior and Xull, but only Xull fails his save and is hurt. Pictograms of lizardmen adorn the walls. They travel north, pass through a hexagonal room with a bare pedestal, ignore a western passage 10/?
and into another hexagonal room with a four-headed serpent on a pedestal. There are holes in the serpent's mouths, and holes in the pedestal. Some of the heroes are creeped out. They think they can turn the pedestal using some of the holes and their weapons for leverage, but 11/?
...decide to leave it for now. They defeat two giant carnivorous flies and find a dead hobgoblin. It carried two gems. A large storage room with a portable winch and pulley system and stairs that ascend ahead are the last discoveries before the end of the session. 12/13
So all in all, a solid session of dungeon crawling, some fun story, and characters moving upward in both experience and magic items. All agreed it was a good session, and Fennig's player was happy with the quasi-pet status of Prince Longshanks. <Fin> 13/13
*That is, Prince Longpaw. More typos than usual in this thread, including a few I won't bother to correct. Got to love Twitter. Have a good week everyone. -Ed.
