SO! My school is requiring all students to complete some Everfi training and it's.... not going well.

I'm tweeting it so others can share in the eyerolls. https://twitter.com/EVERFI/status/1305937385969025032
Beginning:

This course will take approximately 25 minutes.

Before you start the course, you are required to take an 8 page pre-course survey.

Already I have a bad feeling about this.
You know what's not okay?

Dividing women into "women women" and "trans women" (ditto with the guys).

Nope nope nope.

Correct would be "cis women and trans women" even if that meant they had to define "cis" for sheltered individuals.
Also, intersex is not an answer & it's 2020, I'm tired of saying "intersex people exist!"

And YES, a lot of college students are still trying to figure out if they're trans, enby, etc, but calling it "identity" instead of "gender" is... not the best choice.
Q: What role will you take wrt sexual assault on campus?

A: I'm never there! I take evening & online classes & have never spoken to anyone other than my professors & classmates. I appreciate what you're trying to do but grad school is very different than undergrad.
Holy heck, these videos!

Yay for closed captions AND transcriptions but you know what's not accessible??? Having to watch 10 mini videos in a row & being forced to manually turn on captions for each one separately.

Let me turn them on & leave them on!
Trying to portray a diverse student body & acknowledging that women can also be coercive/abusive? Good.

White ppl with dreads & sexually aggressive Black women... not so much.
I aced a survey about my prior knowledge & am now being forced to review & answer questions on the information I've already proven I know. Huh.
Current window:
Learn how the line between intimidation & coercion can be crossed.

But also:
If pressure becomes intimidating, it could cross the line into coercion.

Um???
White person dreads aside, the fashion sense & model variety has mostly been okay. Some cool hair styles, interesting jewelry, and a dude with a pretty french braid.

Missing? Models that are plus size and/or have visible disabilities!!
I get the whole Lady Justice imagery but maybe an image of a blindfolded woman whose breast is about to bust out of her top is not the best choice for the page on sexual assault, hmmmm?
I haven't been counting but so far it feels like there have been more pictures of mlm relationships than wlw and the latter have had less happy examples.
Oh hey, 2 plus size women!

One is a sexual assault survivor & one is a friend.

Their shirts really emphasize that they weren't given properly-fitting bras.

Huh.
And finally a model using mobility aids! Just... as part of a partially grayed out background picture. And once again only as a friend.
Some of the pop-up windows have close buttons at the bottom & others make you scroll all the way back to the top. Consistency helps with accessibility!
Both the pre-course and post-course testing mentions pregnant & parenting students as part of Title IX.

Guess who did not get addressed except in the fine print during the Title IX coverage??

🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🤰🤰👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👧‍👦
That is seriously bothering me.

Too many professors still think they can harass students who need accommodations due to pregnancy, lactating, sick kids, etc. They claim that because it's a "choice" that those students are not protected against discrimination.
The ACA requiring pumping rooms be provided is amazing (& absent from this course). But actually finding out where the rooms are & getting access is like freaking pulling teeth.

Doubly so if you have evening & weekend classes.
"You, a new student, want access to a room in a Staff-Only section?? And AFTER HOURS???" *clutched pearls*

Well, yeah, if that's where you people decided to put it.

But apparently pregnant/lactating/parenting students don't fit this course's focus so nada on our rights.
Whew! I'm done & need to take care of some Title XI protected activities.

But know what's really bothering me atm?

I've gotten paid to review materials like this.

And here I am, doing it for free on Twitter just cuz I'm annoyed.

Dang.
