How to improve more quickly as a musician: a thread
1) Ask your friends to give you brutally honest criticism on a regular basis. They’ll bring perspective to things you’re overlooking... and yes... include your non-musician friends. If anything they -as strictly listeners- should take priority
2)Collab more (a lot more)

Taking part in works with musicians that you resonate with will inspire new ideas and force you to do something different. 9/10 times you’re frustrated with your music, deep down it’s because you’re just spinning your tires doing the same thing.
3)Watch interviews of the artists that inspire you

I recently watched a Kanye interview from when he was my age and it made me realize that he experienced many of the same struggles that I’m facing or have faced creatively. This perspective will help to ease the process—
It’s really easy to get caught up in the glamour of social media that you fail to recognize that your idols went through a lot of the same bullshit both as artists and as individuals that you have/will/do and because of that it’s easier to overcome. If anything it adds to your—
Drive to circumvent those things. I’m at a point now where I quite literally get excited when I run into creative blockages

“I can’t wait to see what’s on the other side of this mf”
4)Remake songs the inspire you, replicating the moving parts will bring you new understanding on a deeper level.

Art, especially in music, is about patterns. When you recreate a song you add that song’s patterns to your repertoire of ideas
5) Take your ego hat off for a second and actually sit down and watch some YT tutorials. There’s hella information to be learned on there but you’re probably missing out because you think you’re “too good for that”...
The most successful people I know no matter what field they’re in like to “play dumb”. Now I don’t mean that literally, but they always watch and listen to anyone no matter how much they think that person may know because that person may know one small thing that could—
Change everything for you, and even if not that one bit of information could make you 1% better.

I know for a fact there’s hella shit you don’t know, if you knew everything you wouldn’t be reading this. So load up YouTube, get a journal, turn off your notifications and LEARN MF
In that same light 6)Watch other people in your niche live on twitch, YouTube, etc and compare their workflow to yours. Once you have the knowledge your next step is efficiency. When you learn different ways to apply your new knowledge you weaponize it. Knowledge is power.
