Matt Haig doubles down as soon as anyone levels any provocation or criticism at him. I always used to defend him because his books have helped so many but he acts in such infantile ways. Last year I tried calmly explaining to him about Section28 & why lgbtq+ can be wary of tories
& he was being so stroppy on here. Even when being treated so gently.
The literary world HATE discussions of class. It makes them fizz with awkwardness. Because class chats ask of them not to just use inspirational quotes & rake in the coin, but to care about economic differences
In the mental health world there are so many.
Yes - mental illness doesn’t wholly discriminate, but also - IT DOES DISCRIMINATE! Think about circumstances beyond your own, which memoir writers tend to think of last & just bung in their obligatory paragraphs admitting private help
1) Matt is being an infant again. Conflating genuine calls for him to acknowledge class with him “bumming people out”.

2.) he’s right, in that 95% of MH writing does ignore class struggles because it’s written by people with fuck all experience of them.
Matt’s take is why I turn down so much mental health work. Because some outlets want me like that- spouting only inspiring quotes. They want me head in hands, sad in photoshoots. They won’t allow me to say my mate killed himself partly cause he was failed by failing health system
My agents have always stuck by me when I’ve had facts/stats all at the ready & then just been diluted down to a sob story.
This is because acknowledging class struggles or systemic failures is seen as less profitable than crying on screen, holding up ‘it’s ok 2 be sad’ placards.
Mental Health has now become a boooooming industry, full of cash for influencers & beige self care quotes on call. Mental health banking adverts (when the financial crash caused a decade of austerity) are so sinister to me.
Ask yourself - who is making money?
What class are they?
