This is the beginning of our weekly series highlighting police incidents at the UC Davis campus. Cops have repeatedly shown us that they can’t be trusted and that they’re only a form of racialized state violence. We need #copsoffcampus to build safer communities.
In 2017, a group of people enjoying picnic day were nearly hit by an unmarked police van while waiting to cross at Russell Boulevard.
The cops honked and yelled at them to “get the fuck off the street.”

Unidentified, plainclothes cops then exited the van and began verbally and physically fighting with the crowd.
3 people of color were arrested at the scene and 2 more people of color were charged afterwards although many more people were seen fighting.

Only 2 police officers faced disciplinary action (the details of which are unknown) while all five were forced to take plea deals.
Police records clearly conflicted with witness testimonies.
An independent audit found that: the Davis police report & internal investigation were “completely inaccurate” and the cops’ conduct was “ill-advised” and “only served to antagonize.”
Is this what safety looks like?
Is this who we trust to protect our community?
