The modern gamer’s obsession with lore stems from a lack of satisfying cultural and religious mythology and history in their daily lives. This is why the classics are so important.
This applies equally as much to people obsessed with theorizing about TV shows, comics, movies, or any other form of
entertainment like that. A hundred years ago all these people would have been great conspiracy theorists or made breakthroughs in historical scholarship
Without good culture, no genuine thought is possible. If you look around, what are the actual guiding principles most gamers, and most of us, quote? Video games and movies (Marvel Syndrome). This isn’t to say there’s no wisdom in them, but man does not live in bread alone.
The best wisdom that came from games that made us think, like say MGS, came about due to active engagement with actual history and myth, but multitudes more, if not most, simply don’t have that much research put into them, and are just soulless and don’t give the same truths
TL;DR read the classics. I’d say start with Greek and Roman mythology and history as written by themselves, then read Church histories and the lives of the saints, then histories of other countries (HRE, European, pre and post Columbus S. America, China, Japan, etc)
