Hey y'all! Let's talk a little bit about high femmes and stone butches, since lately it seems like no one knows what either of them are. THREAD
For starters, I'm talking butch and femme in the context of old school lesbian gender identities, not in the (ahistorical) sense that some people use it where they treat butch and femme like aesthetics. They're not aesthetics, they're lesbian-specific nonbinary genders.
High femme and stone butch are trauma-based sexual identities. They're opposites and complements, and historically high femmes and stone butches partnering is super super common. Both terms grew out of the situation re: sexual violence from the police in the Buffalo bar scene.
A high femme is a femme who due to sexual trauma is uncomfortable touching their partner's genitals but who wants their own genitals to be touched. This isn't to say that high femmes don't reciprocate sexually, there's a unique reciprocity to high femme sexuality.
High femme doesn't mean 'extremely femme', femme isn't a quantity just like being a woman isn't a quantity or being genderfluid isn't a quantity. High femme is a trauma-based gender identity, and specifically one that there's a lot of misinformation about.
A stone butch is a butch who due to sexual trauma is uncomfortable with having their own genitals touched but who wants to touch their partner's. This isn't to say a stone butch receives nothing from sex. On the contrary, stone butches often get off from making their partner cum.
Stone butch doesn't mean 'extremely butch', because just like femme, butch isn't a quantity. There's also a lot of misinformation out there about stone butches.
It's also important to note here, the identifiers 'stone' and 'high' aren't intrinsically linked to femme and butch. They don't generally exist outside of the context of butch-femme culture, but stone femmes exist, and (notionally) high butches do as well.
I've been trying to find info on high butches (or some other term that's the same thing but for butches, because I've never been able to find a usage of the term 'high butch' whereas 'stone femme' is somewhat common). If anyone has any info on that term, let me know.
