As someone from the north east who went to Durham uni for my MA. It was the most Southern place I've ever been to. 80% of the students I met were utter arseholes. It's no wonder the locals fucking hate students. It's a tiny little bubble of privilege in an otherwise deprived area
And most importantly, none of the money that Durham university brings in goes into the wider area. The university doesn't really have a positive boost to the local economy. County Durham was brutally damaged in the 80s and the effects are still obvious now.
The unbelievable gulf between the students at Durham and the local people of the county is enormous and just unpleasant to be around. I really didn't enjoy my time there within the "student experience".
I remember my high school year 13 got a powerpoint from someone from Durham Uni about the benefits of going and the best thing they could manage was "it's only 15 minutes on the train to Newcastle for a night out"

What a shambles
I don't want to hear a defence of Durham University because people who have gone there know full well what the students are like. And if you can't see the issues I'm talking about in this thread then you are without a doubt part of it.
