Guys, the Constitution created a bicameral legislature. Just one of the houses was meant to represent people directly! The other was meant to represent states. Yes, the U.S. federal government has extended its reach domestically, and states are less autonomous than they used to be. But they still enforce most laws, run schools & are the level of government people most interact with. The Senate reflects how American society is organized.
It’s not as if you can just “abolish the Senate” and hold everything else constant. You are blowing up the structure of “the United States.”
