Since a remake (kinda?) is being made of Beautiful Dreamer, I figured I’d watch the original.
I’ve got the dvd around here somewhere, but it’s on Retrocrush, so I’ll just go there
So a bit of a preamble before I get started. This is movie that got me into anime. Like REALLY into it. It was on the scifi channel. They’d show anime in the mornings, but I was a young insomniac, so I almost never got up in time to watch.
In the summer of 1998 though, there was a week where they'd show an anime movie everynight. I don't remember them all, I know Galaxy Express 999 was there, and it's sequel too. It was host by this lady, Apollo Smile.
Apollo Smiles whole deal was that she was a real anime (as far as I remember) I think there was a bit where she was rotoscoped when she’d first appear, but I’m pretty sure that video starts right where that bit ends. The actress went on to voice Ulala in Space Channel 5
Beautiful Dreamer is the 2nd movie for Urusei Yatsura. It was a created by Rumiko Takahashi and it was first premier work, and a hit! The manga was created in the late 70’s but where only getting proper translations now. They tried before, but it didn’t catch on in the states.
Rumiko Takahashi may very well be the most prolific women in comics on the planet(I haven’t researched this). She’s been making comics for over 4 decades and still going strong.
The movie was directed by Mamoru Oshii. He also worked on the tv anime, and the first movie. He and Takahashi had creative differences over the project. The first movie was a lot like the series in tone. Oshii wanted to do something different with the material for the sequel.
Oshii made the movie without consultation from Takahashi, and they parted ways after. Takahashi went on to make Ranma1/2 and Inuyasha. Oshii went on to make Angel's Egg, and Ghost in The Shell. Needless to say, they're both doing fine.
The remake(?) should be interesting, it seems to have no connection to Urusei Yatsura, but you can absolutely see that the characters are still present at least in appearance . Legally distinct Lum without horns.
I've rambled enough, let's begin. I'm watch the dub because it's easier. I like this dub, though that may be nostalgia talking.
