Important, hard-to-find data about types of vacancy in #LA housing, including:

➡️ 46k+ units in a state of non-market vacancy (vacant by choice!) at any time — more than one per unhoused Angeleno

➡️ Financiers own over 22 sq mi of vacant lots in LA — that’s 440 “The Grove”s

Let’s establish a vacancy tax — alongside a rental registry that inventories rental costs & vacancies — as a city OR statewide to incentivize/push the use of vacant units.

We’ve got 150k+ unhoused Californians & 1.4mil affordable units to prioritize over capitalist profit.

Props to @SAJE_ShiftPower, @CalOrganize, @UCLA_Law’s Economic Development Law Clinic (inc. @jacobwooch), & the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project ( @_holleration) for making everything so gut-wrenchingly clear, and to @cantypelettwrs for additional math and clarity in this thread:

I’ve read this report 2x now, & any elected unwilling to propose a public vote for a vacancy tax or implementation of a rental/vacancy registry cares more about...

profit
capitalism
wealthy donors

...than problem-solving CA’s massive tenancy crisis.

I‘m be the only renter in our 80-person assembly, bringing lived experience sorely lacking in Sac, but frankly I‘m also just:
• a dork about data/policy
• a believer in housing as a human right/people over profits
• an organizer who knows that community knows what it needs
