This punitive turn also undermines two of the few bright spots in this pandemic.
First, a policing based on engaging with people rather than enforcing regulations has spared us the tensions and even rioting that occurred elsewhere.

Second, the solidarity in commuities has been critical to our resilience. Neighbours checked on each-other to see if they were OK or could help them.
Now solidarity is in danger of being replaced by suspicion as neighbours are told instead to spy and report on each-other.

Hopefully, the police and the public will ignore the Government and continue to display the robust good sense, the positive practices and the spirit of community all of which the Government so consistently fail to understand.
