Rape epidemic in our countries is deeply rooted in the gendered hierarchies and power from home to the nations capital and state houses.
Castration is headline catching but it doesn’t deal with root of this mass violence! https://twitter.com/nypost/status/1306692839401807875
It’s not that the rapists aren’t known or that laws haven’t existed! It’s the fact that rapists are your fathers, teachers, priests and friends. Smash the misogyny! From sexualisation, the silencing by family and community to justice systems that are plain sexist!
You would have to castrate daily oba in order to try to make us think this is an effective system! Also the fact that we live in societies denied of justice generally means the ones with power buy themselves out of any crime now more than ever that the price would be castrations
Imagine in an environment where already women speaking up attracts such push back and violence, now anyone reporting even a red flag will be equated to wanting a man castrated! This will put a heavy price on victims of abuse
I think our testosterone filled parliaments across Africa have to find non-reactionary out of touch response to the rape pandemic that’s now been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic! These moves only serve headlines not the lives of millions of victims
Oh let’s not forget castration as a response to rape can only come from an uninformed place about rape. Rape doesn’t always involve male sexual organs! There are many tactics of rape recorded across time!
Arriving at castration happens also when rape is framed as only in heterosexual cases and also the perpetrator being male.
About 8 years ago spoke with health workers at Panzi Hospital DRC. They had treated victims of rape as young as 3 months whom perpetrators had inserted objects from wood, bottles etc
Anyone interested in stemming this violence must step out of stereotypes about sex & gender!
