Today, on the third anniversary of the school shooting that shattered my mental health and devastated my community, I’d like to draw attention to the fact that the shooter, Josiah Lyons, is walking free.

Lyons was sentenced to seven years in juvenile detention until he turned 21 but was released after serving six months (after holding). His mother posted a picture of them together vacationing in Alabama in August.

THIS is white privilege. The central park five spent up to 13 years in prison for crimes they did not commit, and a white school shooter who told the judge he wanted to “kill everybody” is free to live in the same community he targeted.

To my friends at MHS and in Mattoon, we deserve justice. You deserve justice. Whether you were barely missed by a bullet or sitting in a classroom on the other side of the school, your emotions are valid.
