#Thread #MeToo #Metooindia Here’s why you shouldn’t unconditionally back men accused of sexual abuse, harassment, assault EVER. Even if you're 100% sure they’re being framed. (Read to the end for what you could do instead) 1/
Men with an impeccable public image, even the most “woke” types, admired & adored for their work, fighting injustices CAN AND DO sexually harass/assault and abuse womxn. And womxn speaking out against them are ROUTINELY dismissed, shamed, pushed into grief and trauma. 2/
Systemic rape culture leads to almost EVERY #MeToo claim being highly susceptible to being dismissed as fake. Each claim YOU dismiss a claim as fake you make that system a little stronger. That makes you an ENABLER. Countless survivors are living in trauma so pls stop. 3/
You may regret that a person speaking truth to power is “losing a battle" but that doesn't mean you can harm the battle against sexual impunity. Integrity requires accused men to not respond with aggression & mockery ( #AnuragKashyap's tweets to #PayalGhosh reek of entitlement)4/
And yes, bigots who troll feminists all year round are coopting #MeToo because it suits them to troll an “opponent”. They won’t see misogynist horrors being committed by politicians they worship (or in their own homes or neighbourhoods for that matter). 5/
You probably don’t like Payal Ghosh- a bhakt, not your ideal “good victim”. And you don't want this to distract from the political disaster unfolding. But no matter what, don't act in ways to send the message that #MeToo is reserved for certain womxn or can shield some men. 6/
#KanganaRanaut may well be a narcissistic manipulator serving right wing propaganda but she can STILL be right about sexual predation being prevalent in Bollywood. 7/
Pls wait to see if Payal Ghosh files a complaint. In all likelihood, with no proof available, she won’t be able to. If she does, wait for the due process to take its course. Are you afraid that the due process will be unfair to one or the other involved? You should be. 8/
The criminal justice system rarely helps survivors of sexual violence or harassment. Start thinking about restorative justice and fight rape culture more. Or JUST DO NOTHING if you are making things worse for survivors. https://twitter.com/noopurtiwari/status/1307560214888173569?s=21 9/9
