We are delighted by reports “gender” self-ID will not become law in the UK. If confirmed, this will be an example of the govt listening to years of thoughtful grassroots campaigning, especially by the UK’s intrepid women’s groups./1of9
LGB Alliance joined this campaign a year ago, driven by concern that the increasing replacement of the word “sex” by “gender” was undermining our rights as LGB people, based on our sexual orientation: a protected characteristic under the Equality Act./2of9
In particular, we were alarmed by the impact on young lesbians, who experience abuse for refusing to accept the notion a lesbian can have a male body. Being exclusively attracted to people of your own sex is now almost despised in the land of LGBTQ+./3of9
We are also gravely concerned by the 4,400% increase, over the past 10 years, in the number of girls applying to gender clinics. Many of them, we believe from a growing body of testimony, are young lesbians./4of9
We’ve watched in astonishment as those who advocate self-ID misrepresent the Equality Act, which allows for the exclusion of male-bodied persons, whether or not in possession of a GRC, from sex-protected spaces. Here’s Stonewall doing it today./5of9 https://twitter.com/stonewalluk/status/1307598543729852416
Our transsexual supporters also oppose self-ID, which removes the need for medical input and a gender dysphoria diagnosis to get gender reassignment. They believe that far from advancing trans rights, self-ID downplays the seriousness of a life-changing decision./6of9
We fully support the rights of trans people as laid down in the law. In particular, we recognize and support the inclusion of gender reassignment as a protected characteristic in the Equality Act, and want it to remain so./7of9
All responsible govts seek to strike a fair balance between conflicting rights of different groups. If the reports are confirmed, @trussliz is working to strike this balance in the UK, & we congratulate her. We want to thank everyone who has helped to achieve this decision./8of9
We especially thank @jk_rowling, who propelled the subject to prominence. We also thank @piersmorgan for constantly asking awkward questions, and @Baroness_Nichol, @DreyfusJames, Graham Linehan, @DebbieHayton and Miranda Yardley for their tireless support.
