We can all look back and assume we would have been on what we now view as the right side of the great moral debates of the past, that the truth would have been clear to us. This is folly, of course, and it leads to moral preening and worse. This is a periodic reminder that we
who are pro-life and we who are pro-choice (I fall into the former camp but we are all in this together) feel very strongly right now that we are the side that will be vindicated. We don't have the extra view-from-nowhere that permits us to judge our interlocutors who disagree
as if we can rightly treat them as the (now) obvious villains of the past. Yes, the stakes are just as high. No, the epistemic judgments (which we might need to reflect on Julia Kristeva to begin to grasp) are not as settled.
