Thread about Autism Classification.

People get very upset about this subject! I’ve got 6 Autistic children ranging from one who will need care for the rest of his life for basic functions to another who likely will get married and hold down a job at some stage. Some in between
Sometimes people with one child like the first child of mine I described get angry about people like the second child of mine I described being labelled autistic. I kind of have an “overview” on this
What I find quite bizarre is that the anger about this perceived “incorrect classification” of my second son would get directed at HIM! It’s rarely directed at the doctors who wrote the DSM 5 which was the guide used to diagnose him? Or even the drs who dx him! Why is that?
What people often fail to see about my first child is the “co morbids”. The co morbids kind of trick you into thinking his Autism is much more “SEVERE” but actually his Autism is still just Autism.
My first son is Autistic but in addition (added on) to that he’s blind, non verbal and incontinent and he is PMLD. Autism didn’t cause those things to happen brain damage did. Those disabilities all stem from Cerebral damage not Autism or that’s what they tell me anyway
I don’t know I just don’t feel like child A’s struggles remove the struggles from child B. The struggles are very very different in nature and can’t really be put side to side and compared
Child A will never experience some of the struggles of Child B and vice versa. It’s like chalk and cheese and Child A has never lived the life of child B so is totally unaware of what he misses. He’s actually very happy. The sorrow is mine because I do know if that makes sense
But! I don’t project my sorrow onto child B and attempt to minimise his reality because child B still does struggle a lot. It’s a kind of weird comparison to make and thing to do 🙈
In any case if anyone feels the spectrum is too broad then surely all that objection should be directed at the people with numerous degrees and expertise in the subject. Not the people who do fall under the scope of what THEY say Autism is. Autistic ppl don’t set the parameters
And it’s kind of weird because some epileptic ppl fit daily and others not as frequently but you don’t ever hear any objections about ppl who don’t fit daily not being “real” epileptics - it’s kind of bonkers really 🙈 For me✋🏻 Even though that comparison is not a perfect one 🙈
