Decided to take the bike out for my own little #heritageopenday tour around #Southampton this morning. Visiting some of the urban archaeology you can still see around the city. Why not come and join me?
First up we have riden from Southampton Water up the Shoreburs Greenway to Netley Common passing the various modern archaeology interpretations at Thornhill Estate. Including stone circles, henges & a wooden henge with miz maze.
Netley common has a long history of human use from #BronzeAge through to #SWW Canadian encampment & modern day recreation. A well Barrow defined sits in north east corner, with interpretation board but not scheduled. Standing on it looking south you might spot a linear earthwork?
That would be the old #Roman Road that ran from Southampton to Porchester. You might have to take my word for it, but you can find visible sections in Netley Common & see its course still marked on #ordnancesurvey mapping running towards Botley to cross the River Hamble
As a quick aside you can also see a boundary stone just outside the common car park marking the join of Hound, Hedge End & West End #Southampton. More on this later when have access to historic maps & documents to cross reference inscribed dates.
It is still possible to find the #sww evidence from the Canadians who camped on the common in the build up to #DDay. I'm sure @SeaSpitfires can either correct this or add more information?
