@mjdorko @dofornop @mcschadenfreude TikTok+Oracle+Walmart? Is this worse you ask?

Let's mull this over for a sec:
(Note: I'm putting the terribly complicated trade war totally aside--I'm no expert there. I'm only discussing this topic at hand.)

THREAD:
1.)
China currently blocks @Facebook, @Instagram, @Google, etc. so blocking US access to a Chinese-owned app doesn't strike me as an out-of-bounds response or surprising. And even though China is a recent champion of consumer data protection from big tech companies,...
2.)
...China has proven to not take issue with using data for government surveillance, so there’s that. It’s not a big jump to wonder how deep unseen surveillance reaches there.
3.)
So let’s talk Oracle. The main reason Oracle is also in this game has to be for the data (of a 100 million monthly US TikTok users to be exact.) This mountain of data, that Oracle will be hosting and supporting, could be used to uncover untold new revenue opportunities.
5.)
...that expose the latest way to effectively proliferate hate speech, propaganda, falsehoods, etc. that deepen our societal divides and fuel civil unrest à la the situation with Facebook? (Re: Facebook: I love having a new hotshot social platform around, like TikTok...
6.)
...let alone one that still feels relatively positive) that can challenge Facebook. for their coveted younger US audiences. FB deserves this challenge for their unapologetic double standards alone, that is, “We stand for free speech and...
7.)
...political neutrality. And yes, we’ll absolutely let you buy and run any amount of targeted ads guaranteed to reach exactly who you need to influence even if said ads are intentionally false. Our algorithm, which favors hate-engagement, will ensure...
8.)
...your content spreads and multiplies until it's the only thing people see in their newsfeeds.” But I digress.)

Finally…Walmart. Really...Walmart? Walmart wants in on TikTok? Yup, they too want *the data* and all those US consumers.
10.)
...so Amazon can compete with Walmart at the same-day delivery game, this is an aggressive move for Walmart; it now has a booming social platform within which to post “shop now” buttons literally everywhere that send consumers to one place and one place only….Walmart.
11.)
But even saying this bit above out loud just made TikTok terribly uncool to the kids. But Walmart isn't "cool," nor should it be cool. It's not their model. They sell flushable wipes and BB guns. So this signals to me: no, the experience will not stay the same on TikTok.
12.)
Like anything that captures magic nowadays, it’s inevitable that its shelf life is like a jar of Tostitos Salsa Con Queso—it seems it will last forever, but after after a couple years and all at once, it changes its composition and tone, and off to the garbage can it goes.
