This reminds me of the only time I have ever gone caving. I am claustrophobic so this was a terrible "I can face my fears" decision in the first place. The body we found was pretty much the end of me challenging that fear ever again. https://twitter.com/dykesweating/status/1307304879128535041
I...oh shit, I never told this story? Sorry, I forget that people don't know I wasn't kidding about being one of the bad kids. So story time, here it goes, it's not long, but it's pretty weird I guess? I should also mention here that it wasn't my first dead body. That's important
Anyway, after I graduated from high school but before I joined the Army I ended up hanging out with what we'll call my best bad decision friends a lot. They featured in such stories as "Busted some guys windows, that time with the arson, and maybe I made out with a ghost"
I was made of poor choices for a really long time. And one weekend when I was supposed to be at Teresa's house I think? Something like that, it was a lie so I've kind of forgotten it, we decided to drive to Tennessee to meet up with some dude PJ or someone else knew. Bad decision
Because the person we were supposed to be visiting had gotten arrested which we found out in Indiana I think? Maybe Southern Illinois. Anyway, we had already driven forever so we got rooms at a shitty motel that was 3 steps from being condemned in retrospect & crashed.
Now this place cost something like $20 a night so...yeah, you can imagine. And one of the few things around besides it was a crappy diner, a gas station, and one of those signs that advertises local things. Forest preserve, caves, etc. We made new friends at the diner.
For those of you wondering, no we didn't know exactly where we were, their names, we were following directions from a girl who had to call her buddy on a payphone because she couldn't remember the name of his town. It's a miracle we survived. My guardian angel was exhausted.
Honestly, if such creatures are real, the minute we decided that 3 girls (two of us not even able to pass as light-skinned) should accompany strange white boys into caves in the rural Midwest is probably when there was a "Fuck these wings, get me a bottle of Jack" moment...
Anyway, we decided that instead of going straight back we could hang out for a few hours. So, into the caves we went. It was stinky, kind of wet and dark even with the little flashlights we had (this was the era of the huge keychain though, some of you remember) and confusing
Mostly because it felt like we were going in circles (hell maybe we were) and then we took a little side path and the musty smell changed. I can't actually explain what death smells like, but you know it when you smell it. We thought it was an animal until we got closer.
Animals don't wear flannel. So, you know that was good for a little screaming & suspicious eying of our tour guides. But they were probably more freaked out than us because (and this is important) they didn't know the guy and this was a small town. So we tramped back out.
The cop was going to need to be called (yes I mean singular, because again very small town) and since we weren't local (and I wasn't exactly legal) our not quite hosts suggested we hit the road. We took the advice. The body had been there a few days & AFAIK wasn't a murder
Or maybe it was? IDEK actually, because basically they didn't find a car, he wasn't staying at the motel, and IIRC they decided he was a tramp who went into the caves to sleep and got lost. And we heard most of this secondhand because PJ kept in touch with one of the guys
This was sometime early in 95 & I stopped hanging with group after I heard about the arson for hire thing so I missed a lot of the follow up. It was around this point the first military recruiter talked to me & I decided to enlist. These things might be related. Questions?
Oh here's the demon summoning story. I'm looking for the making out with the ghost one... https://twitter.com/Karnythia/status/885148057305661440
