Modern AU where Wei Ying starts getting into astrology and Lan Zhan, ever in love with his best friend, humors him and goes along with this interest. Lan Zhan has no real care for it, though.

Until he finds out the compatibility between Scorpio and Aquarius is only 30%.
There are many things Lan Zhan loves about Wei Ying.

He loves his smile. His laugh. His open mindedness and his selflessness. He loves Wei Ying’s ability to somehow always look kissable, but then he also hates it, because what good is looking kissable if he can’t kiss him?
Regardless.

Lan Zhan loves many things about Wei Ying, and he finds his tendency to latch onto a new fascination every week completely endearing.

This week, it’s astrology.
“Lan Zhan, you’re an Aquarius, right?”

“Mn.”

Wei Ying’s head is lying cozily on Lan Zhan’s lap. When Wei Ying grins up at him, Lan Zhan has to try very hard not to run his fingers through his hair. “Let me tell you what the internet has to say about the wonders of your sign.”
“It may not be reliable,” says Lan Zhan, totally not referencing that one time Wei Ying had read online that a student dying in the middle of an exam would grant a everyone else an automatic A, then asking the entire lecture hall, “So, who’s going to take one for the team?”
But anyway.

“This is astrology dot com, Lan Zhan. They’re probably, like, the best experts in the world on this stuff,” Wei Ying says with a wave of his hand.

Lan Zhan desperately wants to hold that hand.
Wei Ying reads from his phone. “Alright, so, personality! It says here that you’re independent and analytical.” Wei Ying looks up. “What do you think?”

Lan Zhan furrows his brows in thought. “I suppose.”
“It also says that you’re aloof, but I refuse to acknowledge that,” says Wei Ying. “You may be like that with some people, like Su She or something, but that guy deserves it. You’re not like that with me.”

A smile twitches at the edge of Lan Zhan’s lips. “Never with you.”
Wei Ying shoots Lan Zhan a smile that he thinks could probably melt snow. “So off to a good start already.” Wei Ying scrolls. “It says you like fighting for what you believe in and you enjoy intellectual conversations.”

Lan Zhan hums. “What do you think?”
“I say yes. One hundred times yes, one thousand times yes," Wei Ying answers. "And you dislike broken promises and egotistical people.”

“Yes,” Lan Zhan says, not having the heart to tell Wei Ying that these seem like pretty generic dislikes, that who /would/ like these things?
“See! Completely reliable,” Wei Ying laughs before passing his phone to Lan Zhan. “Now tell me about Scorpios! And be sure to skip all the stuff about dashing good looks, since that’s obvious.”

“I assume ‘humble’ will not be listed as a strength for you.”

“Lan Zhan!”
Lan Zhan ignores Wei Ying’s pout (god it's such a cute pout) in favor of looking down at his phone. “Scorpios are brave, passionate, and stubborn,” he reads, and Wei Ying nods along so vigorously that Lan Zhan almost huffs out a laugh. “You agree with this?”
“Do you not?” Wei Ying gasps, feigning hurt. “You believe I’m a passionate person, don’t you?”

The twinkle of excitement in his eyes makes Lan Zhan’s heart do somersaults in his chest.

'One hundred times yes,' Lan Zhan thinks. 'One thousand times yes, one million times yes.'
Lan Zhan doesn’t give a verbal answer, though, and looks back at the phone. “It says your weaknesses are that you are secretive and prone to jealousy.”

“Damn, this is accurate,” Wei Ying mumbles, scrunching his nose in thought.
Lan Zhan startles at this. “You get jealous? Of what?”

They stare at each other for a quiet ten seconds.

“...Well anyway!” Wei Ying clears his throat. “Continue!”
“You treasure honesty and lifelong friends. You dislike falseness of character.” Lan Zhan hands the phone back to Wei Ying. “That sounds like Wei Ying.”

“Lan Zhan, you skipped one,” says Wei Ying, then with a grin he continues, “It says here that I also like teasing people.”
Wei Ying sits up until his face is inches away from Lan Zhan’s, until Lan Zhan can focus on nothing but Wei Ying’s eyes, twinkling with mischief. “Why’d you skip it? Do you not agree?”

The tips of Lan Zhan’s ears flush red. He turns his face. “Wei Ying…”
“Lan Zhan, are you embarrassed?”

Lan Zhan swallows thickly.

“No.”

He totally is.
Wei Ying bellows out a laugh and flops his head back down on Lan Zhan’s lap. “I’m kidding, I’m kidding.”

'He’s kidding,' Lan Zhan tries to tell the strangled voices screaming in his head. 'He’s kidding.'
Wei Ying, unknowing of Lan Zhan’s current internal crisis, hums. “Oh, there’s a love section on here. It tells you how compatible signs are based on their trust, communication, shared values…” Wei Ying peeks up at him. “Should I check it out?”
“It seems silly,” says Lan Zhan, half because it does, half because an ensemble of Kill Bill sirens had sounded in his head when the word ‘love’ came out of Wei Ying’s mouth.

There’s still strangled screaming in his head.
“Hm...” Wei Ying locks his phone and closes his eyes. “Well, I’ll just look later, then. And I wouldn’t say it’s silly, Lan Zhan. It described our personalities pretty well!”

“Mn,” Lan Zhan says, and the topic drops.
When Wei Ying leaves his apartment, Lan Zhan gets a little curious about this chart. Not because he believes in it, but Wei Ying is bound to read it eventually, and Lan Zhan, the lover of intellectual conversations, wants to be able to talk to to him about it.

Yeah. That's why.
So Lan Zhan goes on the elusive astrology dot com to look up the compatibility between Aquarius and Scorpio. But he knows what to expect: In fact, if there were a compatibility scale, it should probably be revised to go from 0 to Lan Zhan and Wei Ying.

The page loads.
[Trust]

Lan Zhan knows this will be high, if not 100%. Other than Lan Huan, there is no one on this planet he trusts more than Wei Ying, no one he is himself around more than Wei Ying, and Wei Ying has said the same about him.

So again, this has to be super hi—
[Trust: 1%]

Lan Zhan chokes.

1%? Lan Zhan would trust Wei Ying with everything he has. 1% is the kind of trust Lan Zhan would have towards a stranger for them to hold the elevator door for him, or towards a chef for them to not spit in his food.

Lan Zhan scrolls.
[Communication and Intellect: 50%]

what.

[Shared Values: 30%]

What.

[Emotions: 1%]

WHAT.

[Sexual and Intimacy Compatibility: 40%]

WHAT!!!!!!!
[Overall Compatibility: 30%]

Lan Zhan stares at the number, at the fact that the compatibility between him and Wei Ying is supposedly worse than that of a coin flip, and immediately clicks on the ‘Contact Us’ page.
[Shoot us a message if you have any questions and we’ll get back to you within 24 hours!]

He opens his email.
>Dear members of the review board at astrology dot com,

>I am emailing to inquire about your proposed compatibility between Scorpio and Aquarius. May I ask where you are getting your evidence? It is hard for me to believe that stars can dictate who is meant for who, yet...
>...many strongly believe in this. It is even worrying to the point that some will not talk to others based on their zodiac sign alone. If this page could be revised, or at least led with the disclaimer that it is not factual, I would appreciate it.
After sending the email, Lan Zhan is restless into the next day. It doesn’t help that his laptop has Wei Ying's email logged onto it (“Just in case I need you to politely reply to a professor or something for me!”), and Lan Zhan has seen notifications for five astrology emails.
This is concerning.

Especially if Wei Ying sees their abysmal compatibility.

And the more he thinks about it, Lan Zhan doesn’t understand how one could completely exclude a zodiac sign from their list of potential partners. That gets rid of 1/12 of the world’s population?
But there are always exceptions. If you had asked Lan Zhan years ago if he would fall in love with a loud, energetic, touchy-feely man who sleeps till noon, Lan Zhan would have scoffed.

But then Wei Ying came along, and now Lan Zhan can’t imagine being in love with anyone else.
It’s with this in mind that Lan Zhan takes to Yahoo Answers.

Q: My best friend is a Scorpio. I am an Aquarius. Despite our predicted overall compatibility of 30%, is there still hope for a relationship between us (i.e. we are exceptions to this rule?)

A: lol ur screwed
A: ^^^
Lan Zhan immediately opens his email.

>Dear members of astrology dot com,

>As per my last email, I was curious as to the scientific basis behind your compatibility charts. Is there an equation that one uses to calculate these percentages?
The next day, Lan Zhan heads to a cafe to pick up drinks for him and Wei Ying before a study date.

As he waits for his order, he scrolls through the Scorpio and Aquarius compatibility page again to try and find something reassuring. Not that he believes this stuff or whatever.
He’s broken from his thoughts by an amused, “Whatcha looking at?”

Lan Zhan jerks his hand back. An employee is standing in front of him with a smile on his face that is knowing. Too knowing. “You’re into astrology?”

“No,” Lan Zhan says. Because he’s not.
“But you were just looking at compatibility charts, weren’t you?”

Lan Zhan frowns. He doesn’t think it’s in this person’s job description to peek at a customer’s phone. But he has a look in his eye that suggests he won’t back down, so Lan Zhan sighs.
“I was looking up at the compatibility between Aquarius and Scorpio."

The employee laughs. “And by the look on your face, I take it it’s not good, but that you want it to be.”

Lan Zhan says nothing, because he’s not concerned about the compatibility chart. Not at all.
The employee won't stop grinning at him. It’s not unlike the look Wei Ying always throws Lan Zhan, so Lan Zhan has a thought that maybe this guy is a Scorpio, too. But that would be silly to assume, because this stuff can’t be accurate, or else the compatibility might be, and—
“I’m a Scorpio, actually!”

Lan Zhan goes through the five stages of grief.
“But my opinion is that astrology is all for fun!” he says. “Funnily enough, my wife is an Aquarius. We got married a few months ago and it’s been great! I’ve never been more in love.”

Lan Zhan feels a ray of hope. “Really?”

“Yeah! So don’t worry, and good luck to you.”
Lan Zhan now feels rejuvenated.

Especially when he meets up with Wei Ying for their study date, hands him a coffee, and then watches the smile he loves so much spread across Wei Ying’s face. “You treat me so well, Lan Zhan.”
And yeah, there’s no way stars in the sky can begin to explain the way Lan Zhan’s heart hammers in his chest. “I treat you how you deserve,” he says, and is subsequently blinded by Wei Ying’s beaming smile.

He is so in love.
And with a renewed confidence, half an hour into their study date, Lan Zhan clears his throat. He wants to address the abysmal compatibility chart and provide Wei Ying with real-world examples as to why it is not to be taken seriously.

“Wei Ying.”
Wei Ying looks up. “Yeah?”

“Did you ever look up the compatibility between Aquarius and Scorpio?”

Wei Ying blinks. “No… Why, is there— Is there someone you want to… check your compatibility with?”
Lan Zhan takes a breath. “Wei Y—”

“...Mianmian is a Scorpio, right?”

The silence around them is thick.

“...I was not aware of this.”

“Oh.”

Silence.

“Jiang Cheng is also—”

“Wei Ying," Lan Zhan chokes out. "Let’s study.”
So that didn’t work out, but it’s fine. Lan Zhan and Wei Ying have another study date today. Lan Zhan walks into the same cafe to pick up drinks.

“Hello,” Lan Zhan greets when he sees the employee. The employee who saved his soul. “I hope you and your wife have been well.”
“Well, actually…” he sighs, and Lan Zhan feels a pit settle in his stomach. “My wife and I are getting a divorce. I don’t know what happened. We got married and everything was good, and then it… wasn’t? I’m not really sure.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Lan Zhan says, and he ignores the sirens in his head, because there could be many reasons behind this, like maybe they—

“I guess it wasn’t written in the stars for us to be together.”

Ah.

Lan Zhan blue screens.
The employee sighs. “Anyway, what’ll you be having today?”

'Heartbreak,' Lan Zhan thinks.

“I am fine for today, thank you,” Lan Zhan says.

He turns around and leaves.
When Lan Zhan gets home, he opens his email.

>Dear astrology dot com,

>I am no longer asking.
Lan Zhan does extensive research that evening and discovers that there are also moon signs? Rising signs? And apparently these can all factor into personality and compatibility.

So maybe one of these can explain the attraction between him and Wei Ying.
Lan Zhan picks up his phone. “Brother, would you happen to know what time I was born?”

Lan Huan sighs. “Is this somehow related to Wei Ying?”
In the end, Lan Huan doesn't know what time Lan Zhan was born and has to tell Lan Zhan that no, he does not have his birth certificate just laying around.

Lan Zhan is defeated.

And Wei Ying is still getting astrology emails, so Lan Zhan logs out of his account.
A week later, him and Wei Ying are back in Lan Zhan’s apartment.

Lan Zhan has hope that maybe Wei Ying has moved on, but it vanishes when he hears, “Lan Zhan, I’m bored.” Followed by, “Maybe I should check out that compatibility chart.” A pause. “For Aquarius and Scorpio.”
Kill Bill sirens. So many Kill Bill sirens.

Lan Zhan looks up and asks as calmly as he can, “Why?”

Wei Ying shrugs. He looks a little restless. “I’m bored.”

“Mn.”
Lan Zhan looks back down at his work, making the decision to stay out of this, to just ignore whatever Wei Ying says, and—

“So it says that trust between these two signs is, uh, wow, 1%.”

—and yeah, he can’t ignore that.
Lan Zhan’s brow twitches. “I do not believe that’s accurate. Wei Ying, I would trust you with my life.”

Lan Zhan realizes too late that he’s dragged him and Wei Ying into this, when Wei Ying had kept it general to begin with, but, well. Too late now.
Wei Ying's breath hitches. “You would?”

Lan Zhan keeps his gaze steady. “Yes.”

Wei Ying swallows, then looks back down at his phone. “And it says here that our communication is at a 50%.”

“That’s also inaccurate,” Lan Zhan says.
Wei Ying gnaws at his lip. “Is it?”

Lan Zhan feels a lump in his throat. “Do you think it's not?”

“No! Lan Zhan, I think we have really cool conversations… And I think we give each other a chance to talk, and are equally good at listening, and understand each other, so…”
Wei Ying scoots closer to him with every word.

“And it says—”

“Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan swallows thickly. “I know what it says. I read it. And I understand that not every relationship is perfect, but I am telling you that I feel a connection to you I don't feel with anyone else."
Wei Ying is now right in front of him, eyes wide. “Our compatibility is 30%. What do you think of that, Lan Zhan?”

Lan Zhan takes a breath. “Wei Ying. However you would like to interpret this,” Lan Zhan begins, “I have found my soulmate for life in you.”
“You really mean all that, Lan Zhan?”

“I mean it, Wei Ying.”

“You looked at the chart beforehand?”

“Yes.”

“And it bothered you?”

“It did,” Lan Zhan admits quietly.
Wei Ying's lips curve into a small smile. “You want to know who I’m compatible with, Lan Zhan?”

'Not really,' Lan Zhan wants to say, but then Wei Ying is pressing himself impossibly closer, and Lan Zhan finds that he can’t say anything at all.
Wei Ying takes Lan Zhan’s face between his hands and leans in, the warm of his breath tickling Lan Zhan’s cheeks in a way that has his heart pounding against his chest. “Can I give you a hint?”

“Please,” Lan Zhan says, voice ragged.
And then Wei Ying presses his smile against Lan Zhan's lips, and Lan Zhan leans into the kiss with a bursting heart.

He supposes Plan Literally Fight The Stars can be abandoned for now.
When they break their kiss, Lan Zhan says, “But, the stars—”

“Stars, schmars. I’ve got the biggest star in the universe right here!” Wei Ying kisses Lan Zhan's cheek. “I can’t believe you let that bother you so much, Lan Zhan. Are you that enamored with me?”
'A hundred times yes. A thousand times yes,' Lan Zhan thinks. 'A million times yes. A billion times yes.'

“Wei Ying,” he says aloud in answer, and leans forward to kiss him again.
-3 days later-
Life is great.

Lan Zhan can now kiss Wei Ying whenever he wants. Can tell Wei Ying how much he loves him whenever he wants. Can, like they are now, snuggle up with Wei Ying and watch movies on his laptop with him whenever he wants.
Life is a little too great.

Which is why halfway through their movie, an email notification pops up:

[New email from: Astrology dot com. Subject: Regarding your inquiry about the scientific evidence behind star sign compatibility. FOR FUCKS SAKE, STOP EMAILI…]
Lan Zhan’s breath catches in his throat at the same time that Wei Ying’s does.

“...Wei—”

“Lan Zhan!” Wei Ying presses his face into Lan Zhan’s shoulder. “This is so embarrassing, Lan Zhan.”

Yes.

It is embarrassing.

Lan Zhan has no idea how he's going to explain this.
Lan Zhan looks Wei Ying in the eyes. "Wei Ying—"

“Lan Zhan, I just— I know you do your research, and I was afraid that you'd see the chart and the god awful compatibility and take it all to heart, you know? And—"

Lan Zhan's brain tunes Wei Ying out.

What.
"Wei Ying," Lan Zhan breathes. "What are you talking about?"

Wei Ying looks up at Lan Zhan and smiles timidly. "Lan Zhan. I emailed this stupid astrology site because, like— Lan Zhan! They said we weren't compatible! What kind of bullshit is that?"
Lan Zhan is super confused. "But why do you—"

And then Lan Zhan has a startling realization.

Wei Ying still assumes his email is logged onto on Lan Zhan's computer.

He has no idea the email was sent to Lan Zhan.

Oh.
Wei Ying groans. "It's so silly. I’m silly, aren’t I? Wasn’t that such a dumb thing to do?”

Lan Zhan can only stare. He could tell Wei Ying that no, it's not silly, because he did the same thing. He could.

Instead he says, “It’s okay, Wei Ying.”
Wei Ying whines for a few more seconds. But then he looks up at Lan Zhan with a hint of amusement. “Well, now that it's out there... Maybe we should read their reply and have a good laugh over it!”

“No.” Lan Zhan slams the laptop shut. “We should just disregard it.”
Wei Ying pouts. "Well at least let us finish the movie."

"No."

"Lan Zhan!"

"We can do something else."
"Like what?" Wei Ying leans forward with a grin. "Raise our intimacy compatibility, perhaps?"

"Perhaps," Lan Zhan murmurs, eyes flickering to Wei Ying's lips.

And they do.
THE END!
(lwj: *looking up compatibility chart* the stars will surely show that wei ying and I are compatible
