I am truly saddened by the death of my friend, the Rt Hon John Napier Turner.

He was a great Canadian through and through. Born into modest circumstances in Rossland, BC, he rose to represent Canada as an Olympic athlete, and to serve in the highest offices of the land.
He was a man of sincere faith, often saying that “the highest callings are religious ministry, followed by elected office.” He had discerned a possible vocation to the Priesthood.

He demonstrated that commitment through a lifetime of charitable & philanthropic service.
John personified a gentler time when lifelong friendships endured across party lines, being a close friend to Tories like John Diefenbaker & Sean O’Sullivan.

He was a proud Liberal who cherished our institutions & customs: Parliament, the constitutional monarchy, the rule of law
My grandparents - musicians Mart Kenney & Norma Locke - were lifetime friends, & became Turner delegates at the 1968 & 1983 LPC conventions (members of the “195 Club.”) Through them Mr. Turner introduced me to politics & the vocation of public service.
My condolences to Geills, their family, and countless friends.

Thank-you, sir, for your devotion and service to Canada.

Eternal rest grant unto him, and let light perpetual shine upon him.
Erratum: JNT was born in England, but moved to Rossland, BC as a young child.
