psychoanalyzing my favorite characters
that one site in particular that scientifically explains the metabolism of the perceiving functions is so helpful i cant stop thinking about it when looking at characters and figuring out how they would go about doing something, hella helpful in making sure i stay in character
a fantastic example of the difference between Ne/Si and Se/Ni‘s cognitive processing is looking at dean (INFP) and hank (ESFP) venture for the way they interact with their environment
they’re both Pe before Pi (dean with Ne and hank with Se) so they’re more inclined to perceive things in real-time. however, since dean uses Ne he doesn’t get the rich sensory detail presented in front of him so much as the immediate abstract connections that come from it.
hank is more extreme in his perceiving functions since he’s an ESFP, giving him dom Se and inf Ni. the little abstract pieces of dean is coming up with mean nothing to him here because he subconsciously sees they’re dead-ends.
we can see hank is PERSISTENT on “finding grandpa’s thing” because finding it is time-sensitive and his Ni knows not to fuck around when it comes down to it. i love hank because he really breaks down the stereotype of ESFPs being dumbass party animals and gives them nuance.
DEAN: pop said he’d radio him we were coming.
HANK: pop forgets my name half the time. come on. let’s look around.
here dean’s coming through with his Si, not seeing the big theme going on with his dad that Ni can like hank does.

this is a little off topic but i wanna bring it up for people who dont watch the show. dean is their father’s favorite twin, and dr. venture goes out of his way to let hank know that. before season 7, like in this instance, hank had really only referenced this without his own
emotions attached like a “yeah it is what it is” attitude and his rebellious streak in season 4. but in season 7 he opens up about his TRUE feelings about it to his dad which is probably really hard for a moderate Fi user.
but it shows that dominant Se users may be afraid of purposefully using their inferior Ni because it darkens the mood. it gives them the reality check of what seems to be inevitable and it conflicts with the “ignorance is bliss” mentality of dominant Se.
a dom Se user wants to live life to the fullest but they have the nag of inferior Ni whispering to them about the inevitable. but it can definitely be useful in times when they need to be serious.
Se/Ni users store memory not as isolated concrete points of data, but as an extrapolated aphorism that can be applied to anything regardless of the context they might find themselves in. which is REALLY powerful to have.
one might think on the surface that Se doms are stupid or animalistic because they dont analyze shit immediately. but they’re much more attuned to taking in sensory details about REALITY ITSELF and can better prepare for the future that way.
hank has his own way of doing things. but the thing is no matter how outlandish they look, they always tend to work.
not because he read about the tropes somewhere and decided to store them away as a concrete point of data applicable only to a very small number of instances,
not because he read about the tropes somewhere and decided to store them away as a concrete point of data applicable only to a very small number of instances,
no. even if he did read a trope somewhere, it wouldve dissolved into fluid abstraction as a larger lesson applicable to things regardless of the context he’s physically presented with. thats why he was able to pass whatever new thing the SPHINX training threw at him.
meanwhile dean sees abstract connections in real-time at the expense of the rich factual detail of reality, and he tends to go by what has worked in the past for him and he is very bookish in his overall worldview.
but that does have its upsides because hes able to brainstorm ideas and be able recall specific trivia or facts.
there are instances in which this is helpful...
there are instances in which this is helpful...
and instances in which it is not and makes him look silly.
gonna go back to hank since i’m better at understanding Se/Ni than Ne/Si but i found the perfect example of an ESxP Ni grip.
especially that uncharacteristically serious "i know what your point is hatred." and “the real hatred would never stop a man on a mission of love"

when it comes time to be serious he can get onetrack minded in what he sees as the best choice to make. he's gotta check on how sirena's doing cuz she's not answering his messages and he's assuming the worst. he cant see that it's possible she could be unharmed. thats scary to Se
idk what the point of making this thread was if nobodys gonna read it but i was too embarrassed to put it on main
