[200919] Taehyung in #iHeartFestival2020 performances - analysis and review

First, I will never not shut up about Taehyung touching and checking out the car in Dynamite! I've seen the funny tweets and that's chill, but bigger picture here is this stage seems very influenced by Grease (and the moves and gestures from Taehyung are inspired by Travolta). +
People who watched Grease or listened/watched Greased Lightning will get Taehyung's reference. It's just a really neat detail on how engaged and meticulous Taehyung is with his performance. + https://twitter.com/taefolio/status/1307280830079721473?s=20
Taehyung further shows how much he studied the concept and remains in-character for Dynamite that I don't really need to expand this further. Just read the analysis here which explains everything that we think and feel about his dance. + https://twitter.com/taefolio/status/1301544070154649602?s=20
It seems BTS is using the "Acoustic version" to fit the natural vocal tones for their live performances (the original recording has all their voices edited with autotune). Taehyung sounds just a bit darker and thicker in his first verse (0:56 clip below) compared to how he sang+
this in the recording and in the first few performances (check VMAs), but it's nothing really worth mentioning apart from how he just sounds different - - a few of his "o" vowels particularly in, "crowd", "top, top". +
These are just some of the few things that can tell you he actually sang live 😀

Other than that, there's not much else to say, Taehyung executed consistent technique on his mixed voice for the choruses and finale.

Got another "why is Taehyung breathy". Again, if he‘s to sing this in the true resonance of his chest voice, his volume will overpower the song and will stick out. He has to blend with the rest of the vocal line. +
Projecting an airy quality lightens up a bit of his timbre. Actually, he sounds less airy than how he usually sings this line.

During the refrain, Taehyung uses his upper range - falsetto AND head voice, first pointed out to me from a trusted opinion. +
I'm still a bit shocked although I shouldn't be with how very thin but still connected he can sound on head voice. I did mention his falsetto sounded 'strengthened and thickened'! The usual distinction is falsetto is thinner and breathier, while head voice is thicker. +
But this is not a really certain way to tell which register they're singing. Anyhow, this is just too amazing because the tone Taehyung was projecting was consistent despite the transition to falsetto which would mean +
opening up his vocal cords (and that could have made him leak a lot of air). I think I finally understand how and where it happened 😂 I think the transition happened the second line since he sounded thinner there. +
He went just a little bit softer with the volume somewhere around "ajwossdeon" but picks right back up the volume. It's incredibly tiny and nitpicky, Somethin that someone with an extremely trained ear can catch, but this minor thing just proves again -- live vocals 😼 +
Now, this line I am sure is on his falsetto:
I also loved the Taehyung and Jungkook were doing in the choruses. It's airy and low, very lowkey blending that provides as a contrasting base to Jimin's brighter, sharper tone. +
I wished Taehyung were also made to do more adlibbing, this would have been very easy for him.
For Spring Day:

In the refrain, Taehyung sounds lighter than how he used to sing this, making his resonance a bit brighter too instead of the breathy chest. He sings the chorus with a dark and richer tone but also still puts brightness through his vowels.
There is less with the 'crying' technique (that seems to put him on a chest-dominant mix by default) and minimal lowering the larynx (a technique in classical singing which makes you sound darker, covered) that he both does in Spring Day (just compare this performance to how he +
sings Spring Day here and here ). +
Taehyung's bridge in iHeart is just him singing with more brightness and lightness by simply singing with zero to almost no manipulation, letting his natural baritone resonance shine. This also results in clearer vowels and enunciation. He does the crying sparingly here too, +
usually at the end of the lines. I mentioned this too in another review that the darker, heavier tone in Tae was responsible for all the intense emotions we felt in Spring Day, and that resonance he used before was always on point. +
But it's also nice to change things up a bit as a performer, here the emotions he is channeling to us are more melancholic. +
Another thing worth mentioning: his ad-libs again!! I really love this. Also the very obvious smooth transition of Taehyung's mix to falsetto 😢
Taehyung's overall timbre in Boy with Luv surprised me a bit! He's singing with a clearer mix voice. He'd usually sing his lines here with airiness. Also, Tae's high pitched line in the 2nd verse is blending with the minimal, soft back vocals. +
We were also tagged about Taehyung's “ad-lib”/ "note change"... for clarification this is not a note change, he always sang it like this because he and Jungkook often blend/harmonise for the last word, with JK in charge of the higher pitch while Tae does the lower.+
You can hear this again more clearly (without the blend) in the Late Late Show with James Corden:
Anyway, Taehyung is really consistent with his characters. He is extra generous with his gestures and expressions here while playing a Sanguine character.
Here are some of Taehyung’s other expressions and gestures in past performances. Consistently flirty, a bit dorky, cute, pure... adorable 😍 https://twitter.com/taefolio/status/1274171601995526144?s=20
Anyone else feels blessed? This was a really cool setlist that showcased the diversity of vocal line in pop music, I liked the setlist. 🥺 I didn’t expect any less from Taehyung but he is always full of surprises and adds/changes things to his performance but the quality still👌
And this only makes me even more expectant for Inner Child live (the only thing that makes me think of every time they have live performances this year 😭)
Since it’s coming soon, let’s show our support for his upcoming mixtape KTH1 here: http://taehyungfunds.carrd.co

As well as 5tream his songs, this is just as important as buying! Here’s a playlist for you https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6lFpCUt5UWQVT7UTO6gPOo
