Alrighty, so yesterday I got an email from someone I’d requested material from after #PitMad notifying me that they’d just accepted an agent offer. It’s SUPER disappointing not to have been allowed to throw my hat in the ring but I get it. 1/
Maybe they got an offer from their number 1 top dream agent right off the bat & had no desire to even consider anyone else. Okay. I appreciate being notified right away (hopefully) catching me before I spent the the time to read it if I wasn’t going to have a shot 2/ #PitMad
Today I was following up on a full ms request I made a few days ago on a #PitMad pitch request. I LOVED the sample pages and couldn’t WAIT to read the full. I absolutely was thinking it would be an offer. INSTANT LOVE. 3/
I’ve been refreshing my inbox repeatedly for days waiting for the full to arrive. I pretty much never follow up on full ms requests but I did today because I was THAT impatient for this ms. Then came the email that the author already signed with someone. 4/
I’ll be quite frank. I feel devastated. I don’t know if the author signed with someone before I read it and ultimately, I suppose it doesn’t matter. It won’t be mine & it was never going to be, it seems. 5/ #PitMad
I’m not posting out of sour grapes. Though I am somewhat demoralized & exhausted but the #PitMad merry-go-round this time. Let me just gently suggest that if you accept an offer for rep & elect not to allow other agents to throw their hat in the ring (which is your right)... 6/
Please let those agents you are withdrawing your submission from know IMMEDIATELY and not days later. Things happen VERY quickly with these pitch events & agents are running flat out reading until all hours trying to stay in the game & every minute counts. 7/ #PitMad
When you feel like the time you spent reading a ms you don’t get a chance at could have been allocated to something else, it’s tough. I know I’m not the perfect agent for everyone. I don’t expect (or even want) an author to let me read their ms just because. 8/ #Pitmad
It’s not really about my vanity. No one wants to have their time wasted. Anyway, I’m just saying in this particular event, getting around to those notifications in a few days doesn’t really work. I think in this case I would have been heartbroken no matter what 9/ #PitMad
This series of tweets brought to you by an agent who missed watching her baby roll over for the first time this week while I’ve been reading around the clock. Not the biggest milestone ever. It’s fine. But most of us are bending in half to race-read submissions. So. #PitMad 10/
