Sonic in 2021 is on the horizon, so I& #39;m gonna make a thread of my overall thoughts on Sonic in the 2010s era just to make peace with it and conclude my feelings thoroughly before moving on. I don& #39;t know what to expect going forward, but I don& #39;t wanna be mentally stuck on this LOL
I& #39;ll mostly talk about art/animation/writing stuff, because game design simply isn& #39;t something I& #39;ve studied or worked in enough to know much of what I& #39;m talking about. I& #39;ll gloss over it a little though. Prepare for big thread rambling and ranting about fictional hedgehoghttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🧍‍♂️" title="Stehender Mann" aria-label="Emoji: Stehender Mann">
To get cutscenes outta the way, I wanna make it clear that when I say they don& #39;t use their eyebrows, I mean they don& #39;t use them enough. They don& #39;t really morph around smoothly like the old rubberhose cartoon eyes they were inspired from and just take the easy way out with the-
-eyelids usually whenever there& #39;s a perfect moment to go all out. Sonic& #39;s mouth being stuck to the side of his face at ALL times is getting annoying too. It feels like they& #39;re being animated as if the only reference given was promo art.
Idk what& #39;s stopping them, but I just want the characters in the mainline in-game cutscenes/animations to be as expressive as they are pretty much EVERYWHERE else. I want it to feel alive, fluid, I wanna be able to say "Wow!". Stiff animation really hinders an experience for me.
For writing and worldbuilding, I severely hope things get more solid going forward, because everything so far is just all over the place. Tidbits of lore get randomly told with NO visual explanation and sometimes even contradict what we& #39;re shown.
Like, if there& #39;s no money, what are the casinos for? If there& #39;s two separate worlds for humans and animal-dudes, why were South, Westside, and Angel Island all on Earth? And even if there is really are two worlds, why are they never shown going from one to the other?
We basically went from what felt like a story building itself in the world of Sonic the Hedgehog from game to game, to what now feels like random stories being told with the characters. I hope that moving forward the gaps are filled to pull it all back into a coherent universe.
I hated Lost World SO MUCH because of its tone and how it stained stuff coming after it with zetis, the baby toy badniks, and whatever they did to the environments. Jacked up the WHOLE art direction imo. (Minus TSR tho, it surprisingly escaped all that aside from Zavok somehow)
SLW is the only Sonic game I& #39;ve EVER looked at and felt like "Man... I am NOT the target audience for this". And I& #39;m not. They literally said they were trying to attract Mario fans with it, contradicting what made Sonic stuff cool in the first place. It was different and wild.
I know like every generation we have Sonic change and then people want back their Sonic, I started with the classic games and didn& #39;t even really notice the transition from classic to modern, so noticing whatever happened in 2013 feels mad weird, and it& #39;s probably my turn now.
Y& #39;know when I think back, I can& #39;t think of a specific Sonic game I want things to be like again. I just want the best elements of Sonic put into something fresh. That& #39;s what I thought it was working towards until LW. Then it was just watering down stuff we already had before.
So, I don& #39;t know what to expect from the next game. Sonic Team got transformed into the "Sonic Studio" apparently, the movie was a big hit, and a lot of stuff has shifted around. All I can do is wait and hope to have my mind blown. Idk if I can handle another "just ok" experience
Sorry for venting all this here, but y& #39;know I& #39;m not too comfortable giving the few friends I have left a Sonic lecture LOL
So, in conclusion, if SEGA wants the next Sonic game to be a banger, they know EXACTLY who to include.
