Oh my god, if I see one more thing about the beautiful friendship between RBG and Scalia, mourning how we may never see such friendships between liberals and conservatives ever again, I am going to scream.
Because here's the thing with that shit — the subtext is always that the onus is on the Left to cultivate such friendships. It's not on people on the Right to be less shitty or insulting towards various groups of people.
My feeling has always been, regardless of political affiliation, that there are enough awesome and kind people out there that I can spend time being friends with that I really don't need to waste my time on assholes. I am, in fact, HIGHLY suspicious of people who do.
Let me tell you. People who think the attention and approval of those who hate them is intrinsically more valuable than more easily accessible friendships are, almost without exception, total assholes.
ADDITIONALLY: Those who feel this way are perfectly free to go be friends with people who don't believe they are fully human. No one is stopping them, least of all me. I, however, will continue being friends with people who are not jerks.
