The baby monitor screechs and a sob echoes in the room, waking up the couple. Haru stirs from his sleep with a groan and he's about to get up when a hand brushes his cheek.
“I'll go. Stay here.” Aki's voice is a tired but warm whisper breaking in the darkness.
“You sure ?...”
Haru asks as he searches for his partner's eyes, drown in obscurity. He can hear the smile on Aki's face when he answers “Yep. Shared burden and all, y'know ?”
It doesn't miss to pull out a chuckle from Haru as Aki leaves the room quietly. But curiosity hits him and sets the
volume louder on the audio device. His ears catch on fumbled sheets when Aki sits on the bed, their daughter sniffing back a new wave of cries.
“Can't sleep princess ?”
“I had a nightmare...” The girl answer in a broken moan.
“There there, it's alright now.”
It's always so
surprising, how tender Aki's voice turns when it comes to soothe her.
“Can you tell me a story ?” The tone is hopeful. Haru knows Aki is damn weak against her.
“Eh... Alright then...”
He seems to hesitate, probably searching for inspiration somewhere in the room. And he
eventually finds it. “Well, how about I tell you about that lil' boy's story ?”
“Squishy has a story ?”
Squishy. The girl squirrel's plushie. Haru stiffles a laugh into his fist.
It's cute and smart. Well done.
“Yep, he does. Come on, let's get more comfortable.” The springs of
the mattress complain a bit while Aki takes place in the bed, scooting closer to his daughter.
Then he clears his throat, using his best narrator's voice to begin. “Well, you know, Squishy used to be a wild and untamed squirrel. He was wandering from one place from another,
freely, with no strings attached.” Aki pauses for a while and Haru shifts position in the bed, frowning.
“But still, there was one animal he was really attached to. A raven.”
“A raven ?”
“Yeah. They shared a small place in the crook of a oak tree. They were taking care of each
other's and often played in the branches, high above the rest of the world. It was fun for a time. Until the raven felt the need to fly highter. To be free from that tree where the squirrel was holding him back.”
A shiver runs on Haru's spine as a similar memory comes back to his
mind. Bad memories actually.
“Why Squishy didn't let him go ?” The question is genuine. But Haru is sure Aki takes it like a blow. And Haru is kinda curious about the answer.
“He was scared to lose him. Even though he knew the raven was sad, glued to the ground. But if they
stayed together, maybe they would be invicible and forever happy ? One way or another. That's what the squirrel thought.”
“What happened in the end ?” The girl seems to be expecting every words coming from Aki like a spell.
But Haru is even more captivated now. He takes the baby
from the nightstand to settle it by his pillow, waiting.
“In the end, they fought. Very hard. And the squirrel ran away from their home.” Aki's voice is dripping with sorrow and Haru can feel tension squeezing his heart.
“So, the squirrel went to the only place he knew he would
be welcomed to. It was a house, where a kind human used to feed him from time to time. And the squirrel really liked than human. He was also taking care of other animals. He had a regular cat and a fluffy pomeranian coming everyday.” A chuckles came out from the child's mouth.
"That's so cute ! I want a cat and a dog too !”
“Ah. We already discussed that topic... “ Aki lets out a dry laugh before going back to the main topic. “Anyway. The squirrel was so frustrated and hurt. He was waiting for the human and when he came back, he claimed his food,
but ended up biting the fingers trying to pet him into comfort.”
The girl hisses at the words and Haru's hands curl into fists.
“Deeply upset about the rejection, the human backed off and felt betrayed. He turned into a lonely man and even forgot to feed the cat and the small dog
who were taken aback and worried about the human's attitude. And the squirrel started feeling remorse. So he worked on himself and opened up to the human, finally accepting his help. He was working hard so he can be forgiven one day. They shared meals - the quirrel brought him
some nuts and berries - he took shelter in the warm house, far more heartwarming than his hole in the sorrowful oak tree, full of grim memories. And under all this good influence, the squirrel became a better living being. His presence is a balance in the household and he even
gave some helpful advices to his comrades, the dog and the cat. A great complicity and intimacy grew between him and the human again...” Aki's voice trails off, shaken by a sudden wave of feels.
And Haru's eyes water a little, his heart swelling uncontrollably. Idiot...
“So the human forgave him ?”
Haru's rollercoaster of emotions is cut off by the child's question.
“Yeah. The squirrel is lucky don't you think ? Now, they're here for each other's, for the better and the worst. And the squirrel promises the human he won't bite him ever again.
He's truly thankful for this second chance. And they live happily ever after, in this house filled by the barks of the dog and the meows of the grumpy cat.”
“I'm so glad Squishy is happy now !” The girl giggles but her laugh is cut off by a yawn. “Yes. He is. Truly.
Now, it's time to turn off the lights, darling.” Aki says, leaving a peck on the girl's cheek before he moves off the bed. “Good night. And don't worry, Squishy will keep you safe.”
Haru hears him walk out the room and puts the baby monitor on the nightstand in a hurry.
Aki comes back and gets into bed to curl against Haru's body.
“You're still awake ?” He asks, brushing his fingers in Haru's hair. Haru sniffs and throws his arms around his neck.
“Mmmm... I think Squishy needs a hug...” He says, voice trembling a little.
“You were listening ?! And wait, are you crying ?!” Aki sounds panicked and it draws out an unexpected laugh from Haru.
“It's nothing. I just... love you.”
The hand sweeping the golden hair stills and Haru can feel Aki's heartbeat going wild against his.
“Yeah... I love you too.”
And the squirrel too, can finally have a good rest, safely nestled in the human's arms.
Ngl, I made mayself cry a little *wipes tears*
It was inspired by some old tales from Jean de la Fontaine, featuring animals. It was so cool to dive into those gems from my childhood again ☺️
