There are a lot of people who are deeply concerned right now about Roe v. Wade being overturned, and the ACA being deemed unconstitutional, and it makes sense, because both of those things will have terrible, life-altering consequences for lots of people.
But it's also a week where we learned that forced sterilization is happening to women in ICE detention centers (as well as ongoing sexual assault). There are also so many low-income women who haven't been able to get abortions. Choice is not a reality for many already.
This doesn't diminish the fear that many people have of newly being subject to tyranny and violence, but it is an opportunity to realize that for some people, your worst nightmares are already a reality.
and now is an opportunity to stand with them in their demands for healthcare, to abolish ICE, to defund the police, to make abortion not only accessible but free.
If people with a medium amount of structural power were willing to stand in solidarity with people who have almost none, it wouldn't be hard to win elections. The Supreme Court wouldn't be calling the shots. This future is unlikely but it's not impossible.
