/What I learned from RBG - a thread: As a woman who worked in a man's world - ministry - I was often told I "should just be glad they let me" have or do my job, have a say, etc. In other words, don't rock the boat, you're lucky to be here. Be grateful and be quiet. Do your job.
/I WAS so excited to be hired (finally, a paid position!) as worship leader. I didn't want to jeopardize that. I wanted to fit in. And I WAS grateful as it was quite uncommon for a woman to be in my position. But the truth was that they were fortunate to have me as well.
/ I did my job well. I was a good employee. I worked hard. I asked to be ordained and licensed as my male counterparts were. This happened but my home church refused to do so publicly. I was ordained in my mentor's church.
/ I realize that I remained pitifully grateful for any opportunity I was given. Any responsibility. RBG was asked when there would be enough women on the SC. She answered, "When there are nine." In reflecting on this answer, I realize we are often satisfied w/tokenism.
/We are so grateful to finally be included we don't fight or ask for more. We see ourselves as somehow being "allowed" to do HARD WORK instead of remembering that we are gifted & called and the world is fortunate to have us. Tokenism may crack open a door, but it is not enough.
/RBG taught me to not settle for one seat at the table and to recognize that when I DO sit at the table, I bring worth and value. I can still be grateful, but no on is just "doing me a favor"- I have a right to be there and I bring value as well. This has been empowering for me.
