Ruth Bader Ginsburg means more to me, & to women, than the men in our lives will ever understand. I grieve for her family but I also grieve for what her seat stood for. She was reassurance that my life, my work & my body matters. That I am the captain of my own ship.
Almost immediately, I’ve gotten 100s of texts from my mom, aunts & female friends to see how everyone is doing. In contrast, I got 1 text from my brother (he’s a good dude, + my dad was already asleep)
Knowing that RBGs passing is sad but wont affect your everyday life is the definition of privilege. Losing a defender like RBG cannot be minimized. She mattered to so many people. She was the diff btwn living a life that is available or living the life we are entitled to creating
Also it’s probably a good time to discuss why one person (regardless of party) has so much power over so many people’s lives.
Her seat is the diff between having a choice. The ability to choose one’s own healthcare, the ability to love freely, who’s considered a protected class under federal law, the ability to choose ones career path and even the outcome of the 2000 election.
