It’s pretty simple why Marc Gasol won DPOY in 2013 but wasn’t 1st-team All-Defense. The media voted DPOY and coaches voted All-Defense. Different voters, different conclusions.
The media gave LeBron the 2nd-most votes for DPOY and the coaches gave LeBron the 2nd-most votes for All-Defense. In DPOY, he finished 2nd to Marc Gasol. In All-D, he finished 2nd to Gasol’s teammate Tony Allen. Media and coaches disagreed which Grizz deserved more credit.
The DPOY/2nd-team All-Defense issue happened in 2013 with Marc Gasol AND in 2012 with Tyson Chandler. After two years in a row of inconsistencies between media and coaches, the NBA pulled the All-Defense vote from coaches and aligned DPOY and All-Defense with media.
Imagine how fired up LeBron would be if Gasol won DPOY in 2013 and didn’t even make 1st *or* 2nd team All-D. It almost happened.

Gasol would‘ve been left off BOTH teams if it weren’t for a loophole. Chandler and Noah tied for most C votes; both made 1st. Gasol snuck onto 2nd.
