Yesterday (the day this was posted) marks 21 years since the Marshall decision that states any status Mi’kmaq person is LEGALLY allowed to fish for a moderate livelihood under their inherited treaty rights. The protestors cut and destroyed ALL of their gear the night before this.
The protestors have been using intimidation tactics to try and scare the Mi’kmaq fishermen from practicing their rights. They’ve been circling boats at unsafe distances. Putting themselves and the lives of everyone on the boats in danger.
Here is the link if you would like to watch the full video. https://www.facebook.com/robert.a.syliboy/videos/10164043106180534/ here is a link to a video from the day before when the protests started. https://www.facebook.com/robert.a.syliboy/videos/10164033730060534/
Last night they tried another intimidation tactic. They waited until a Indigenous fishermen in a small boat went out to check their gear before they started shooting and chasing them down in an attempt to sink their boat out in the ocean.
Part 2: I’m going to talk about the Marshall decision here to provide backstory. A Mi’kmaq man was charged for fishing under his inherited treaty rights in 1993. He fought at every court level for his right to fish. His case went to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1999 and he WON!
Part 3: The Supreme Court of Canada affirmed that Donald Marshall Jr. was LEGALLY allowed to fish under the treaty of 1752 which states the Mi’kmaq people can fish at any time and sell their catch for a moderate livelihood.
Here are photos that were taken by people the shoreline. The lights from the boats lit up the night sky.
The protests continued today and the police FINALLY made their appearance after the protestors taunted the mi’kmaq people with slurs, sexualized Indigenous women, cut traps, destroyed gear, and tried sinking boats filled with Indigenous fishermen and women.
Businesses in the Digby area are denying services to Indigenous people. Purely based on their race because of the protest. They refuse to sell them fuel, food, and water. This is discrimination at the highest degree. Nearby reservations are providing services to Mi’kmaq people
If you are Indigenous and you were denied services based off of the fact that you are Mi’kmaq you can file a complaint here: https://humanrights.novascotia.ca/resolving-disputes/how-file-complaint
Mi’kmaq chiefs have declared a state of emergency in the province of Nova Scotia due to the racism, discrimination, and violence the Mi’kmaq people are experiencing for LEGALLY practicing their treaty rights.
The Mi’kmaq fishermen and women, supporters, and allies decided to block off the wharfs in an effort to protect their boats and gear from being destroyed. And to protect themselves from protestors who have shown them nothing but hostility and endangered their lives
The Indigenous fishermen went out and set their traps. When they returned to collect them they didn’t see a single buoy. Every single one of their traps were cut and left at the bottom of the ocean. They had to drag for them and they were able to retrieve 10/50 traps.
“It’s not about race it’s about conservation”

Yes being racist and mocking Indigenous people when they’re praying for healing and peace is going to help conserve ocean wildlife
This man was mocking Indigenous people who were drumming and singing by banging on his gas can. He coaches little league baseball and minor hockey. I can’t imagine the things he must teach those kids. He also took a news interview the same day. You can easily find out who he is.
Commercial fishermen we caught ILLEGALLY hauling Mi’kmaq traps. Commercial fishermen are currently out of season. Hauling gear that isn’t yours is illegal. Hauling gear out of season is illegal.
The RCMP have made an effort but they’re outnumbered and can’t keep up with the illegal hauling of Mi’kmaq traps. The DFO still haven’t made an effort to make an appearance when they’ve been asked to countless times.
The commercial fishermen are waving weapons around to try and intimidate Indigenous fishermen.
Commercial fishermen caught hauling Indigenous traps part 2
Another video of commercial fishermen illegally hauling gear while other commercial boats hid them. I should also mention that the boat was flying the Acadian flag. The Mi’kmaq were essential to Acadian French survival. Without them they would’ve starved and froze to death.
Non-Indigenous have always had a problem with Indigenous people fishing under their treaty rights. This isn’t something new. Both of these videos are from fishing disputes in the Maritimes. 20 years apart. History almost repeated itself.
Here’s the other half of the second video of the commercial boat trying to cut off another Indigenous boat
Part 4? of commercial boats hauling Indigenous traps.
Here is a list of people in power you can contact. Here is also the e-transfer you can make donations to if you would like.
Here is the treaty that states the Mi’kmaq right to sell their catch.

For those who say we “live off taxpayers dollars”, this is where we get our money.

This is how many tags the Mi’kmaq have in comparison to non-Indigenous fishermen. Who is the biggest threat to conservation?
Nearby reserves are opening their businesses 24/7 to serve those who are being refused service for being Indigenous. This woman is kindly opening her home to anybody who needs it. (Also we stan Truro Starbucks)
These local businesses are enabling and encouraging hostility towards Mi’kmaq people. They are in support for infringing on Indigenous treaty rights. One of them had the AUDACITY to use George Floyd’s name and “I can’t breathe” in their post. DISGUSTING.
These are only SOME of the disgustingly racist posts locals have made. This man wants to start a petition to bring back Residential Schools where children were murdered and abused for over 160 years. His son exposed his family for what they’ve done to Mi’kmaq children in the past
Another racist threatening to kill Indigenous people if he gains access to a gun.

An indigenous woman had to pick her Mi’kmaq children up from school today because of racist teachers and staff members.
