This is a thread dedicated to the most underrated scene from inglorious basterds. The scene where col. Hans landa interrogates Emmanuel (Shoshanna) in the restaurant to check the security of the cinema hall where hitler is going to watch a propaganda film.(spoilers) (long thread
In the very first scene of the movie it is set up that how manipulative Hans landa is. He first lures you through his politeness during the investigation, makes you comfortable and then slowly turns evil and makes you confess.
In the first scene, He goes to monsier la pedite's house because landa knows he is sheltering jews. He talks all politely and gives a false sense of superiority to la pedite and then completely turns the tables and fires on the Jews who are hiding in la pedite's basement.
But one girl escapes. Her name is Shoshanna. Shoshanna opens a cinema and changes her name to Emmanuel mimieux.
In her cinema, Fuhrer hitler is coming to watch a propoganda film about a nazi soldier and hans landa is the security incharge their. During a meeting of gobbles and Emmanuel, there shows up hans landa.
Emmanuel is immediately transported to the darkest day of her life but somehow manages to control her emotions. Now landa will be questioning Emmanuel alone. This set up is enough to keep you on the edge of your seats. Your heart pounds faster. Their is just so much tension.
You just somehow want Emmanuel to finish this interrogation and not giveaway her original identity. But hans landa is suspicious of Emmanuel because he somewhere knows that she is Shoshanna but just wants to confirm this one last time.
In the first scene, there is emphasis on milk and how hans landa absolutely loved the glass of milk in la pedite's house. He knows that Shoshanna heard all the conversation that happened there. Just to terrify her, he orders a glass milk for her.
Now the conversation further moves. Hans landa orders 2 strudels. Strudel is a pastry that is made of pork.
In jews, according to the kosher law, you cannot mix dairy products with meat. Just to confirm shoshanna's Jewish roots, he orders the strudels with cream. Meat and milk together.
Now Emmanuel cannot deny otherwise it will expose her Jewish roots. So she eats it. But she does not know that hans landa already knows and has been watching her expressions throughout.
Then landa says to her that he wants to ask some more questions to her and gives her a hard stare looking straight into her eyes. But then jokes and gives a smile. He has already seen the fear in her eyes. He doesn't need to ask more.
Whatever I write about this scene is inferior to how this scene plays out in the movie. Melanie Laurent and Christoph waltz hold this scene together brilliantly. Also the editing and cuts just create more and more tension.
The dialogues have such a great rhythm that suspense is created just through dialogues. Only closeups are used in this scene nothing fancy but the tension is very high keeps you on the edge of the seat all the time.
This is why I love Tarantino. He writes with heart and that's why it reaches our heart.
This is just one scene. There are plenty in the entire movie which if watched carefully in silence can giv you the ultimate cinematic experience that no other film has been able to acheive.
