My late aunt was a teacher at the TN govt girls school.
She taught commerce, accountancy, office management and typewriting for classes 10, 11 and 12.

Every year, she was alloted paper correction duty for board exam papers.

She would bring the papers home to correct / n
Bring the answer books home, Cos her school at Arakonam used to be scorching hot during summers and no water facility. ( Timeframe i am speaking of is 1990s 2000s ).
This was my favourite aththai.
The one whose house i spent all summer holidays, each year./ n
So she correcting papers, meant i could sit beside her, observe how she evaluates, what she refers, how she scores the answers.
I got to count and total the papers and write down totals with pencil ( for her to check).

Ive seen papers from cheyyaru district, chengalpettu, kanchipuram, etc.
We wouldnt know roll numbers obviously.
And here's what i saw .
People used to write appeals.
" I am the only daughter, no mother. Father is drunk. Pls dont fail me "
Inside the answer sheet /n
Every year , i wouldve noticed atleast 5 out of a bunch of 800 papers having such appeals.
My aunt used to read them out loud...
And feel so sorry for that kid.
No mocking.
She could relate to the way a question was attempted, for eg... And then the fervent appeal.

Ethically such things dont find a place in scoring for exams.
But morally it was so obliging for her.

She used to go back to her own students next yr and ask them to sincerely study so they dont have to appeak to the evaluation folks.
There was such empathy in her feedback.

When my aunt died of cancer in 2009, 100s of people ( all of those who studied in the govt school, tamil medium) now in well settled positions came for the funeral.
They all had 1 thing to say about my aunt..
She always had something to help us with .
Raised by brothers, in a fatherless house, studied in english medium but had to teach in tamil so had to adapt and learn again...
Unable to have a child of her own, dedicating all years of living life to teach people...
These misgivings made her strong.

Nobel soul.
People are flawed.
It is how we adapt ourselves, and how we enable them to adapt themselves to co exist.
How we bring their strengths forward without breaking them,
Thats what someone with a responsibility to hone people, can end up creating.

Perfection is a show stopper.
