This thread is basically an addendum to what I said in my headcanons thread, about who I believe W. D. Gaster is.

That said, if it's ever SL relevant, or it could make a RP better, my Sans will have whatever your interpretation of the two's relationship is by default.
That way he can just be a member of the same species as Gaster, be one of his creations, or what have you. I don't like it being just one way or the other.

That said though, here's my personal take on what I think Gaster was. I think Sans and Papyrus were parts of him.
That is mostly just a headcanon, though there are things that corraborate them being that specifically.

I'll go down the list to start, first with their names.

The W.D. in Gaster's name is supposed to be short for Wingdings, so let's dissect that name a bit.
Comic Sans and Papyrus are notorious for being horrible fonts. Wingdings, however, was not even supposed to be used as a font, originally.

The name "Gaster" could mean a few things, but a lot of people, including myself, just care about the aster part.
Aster is actually the name of a typeface. If you don't know what those are, they're basically a font that comes in a set of multiple different versions of itself.

Aster is a somewhat jagged, business looking kinda font. You've probably seen it before.
The connection might be a bit loose, but the idea Gaster is one part a goofy font, another part a jagged font, that says to me that there's a thematic connection there.

Sans is a goofy font, Papyrus is a jagged one.

Let's move onto more solid connections between them.
Considering the skulls Sans attacks with are labelled as Gaster Blasters in the game's files, and that it's implied Papyrus can use them as well;

That means Gaster has to be physically tied to the two.
Gaster was split across time and space; What I'm saying is that Sans and Papyrus were parts of him that split off as a result of that accident.

I believe them, along with the creatures in Room 269, 272, and the Gaster Followers, to some extent, are parts of him.
Now, let's look at the why of that. To start, we'll go over more obscure things. You remember Entry Number 17?

If you do, good, now what about Room 272? Room 272 is the one with the odd, hooded-like creature in the middle.

These are the only times Wingdings appear in Undertale.
Entry Number 17, you might not know, is spoken in all caps Wingdings. Lower case Wingdings are different symbols.

Most monsters in Undertale speak with an asterisk in front of their speech. One of the only exceptions is Papyrus.

You might know by now where I'm going with this.
The being in Room 272 speaks in lower case Wingdings, and with an asterisk in front of their text.

The only two instances of Wingdings in the game are spoken in the style of how Papyrus and Sans speak.

Not to mention, Premoniton plays in room Room 272.
To me, that's pretty good evidence. You could hand wave it with it how much of a stretch it is, but eh.

Now onto smaller connections. In the official Undertale tumblr, Sans makes a quote very similar to a G Follower.
It's also interesting how Sans talks about Shyren's lower body, above. Shyren is actually two creatures that make one whole; This is likely alluding to Sans and Papyrus, as they're actually the biggest pieces of Gaster still around.

Now, let's talk about the workshop.
