I had an interesting convo today with one of young employees. Somehow, the JK Rowling "transphobic" book came up. It got interesting - and, I ended up taking time to show her a little about Salman Rushdie, and why a fatwa was put on his life. Her response to me - that's not right
I said, I agree. Now, let's apply that to JK Rowling. As the look of understanding appeared, I told her it's ok to tackle uncomfortable truths, it's a part of growing up. We took a volatile subject, and we found a way to come to a basic truth at the center.
We ended up talking about sex based rights vs gender based, and the road women have taken to get this far. Another cool side bar - we talked about a student recently in the news - he had identified as black, taken a spot designated for a black student. She agreed it was wrong.
I said ok, let's look at that idea and apply it to sex-based vs gender-based laws. It clicked. To me, that is mentorship - talk respectfully to one another, and show the bigger picture. As adults, we need to talk to young people, stay calm when it goes awry, and stay connected.
Throughout the day, we talked about our similarities, our differences and found a common ground. Young people are so full of energy, and ideas. I remember being that age - how difficult I was for my parents. But they taught me about some basic truths in life. What a lesson.
