I watched #GoodOmens both in french dub and sub and some translations they chose were really interesting...
So here's a thread with 62 highlights!

Featuring: Crowley calling Aziraphale “mon ange”, hidden-smut, HC confirmation, swearing in french and many more!

Before we start, I just want to say that I translated everything they say in French (yellow text at the top) as literally as I could in English (white text at the bottom). Translating literally is often not the best solution but here I had to +

so that everyone will be able to understand the changes they made.
I’m also not a professional translator or linguist. I did my very best to avoid making mistakes but please excuse me if I did.

End of the Disclaimer

#1 The first thing you need to know is that they actually translated Crowley’s name to Rampa (Rampant when he still goes by Crawley). And here’s what he sounds like:

#2 Aziraphale’s name stays the same but the pronunciation differs.

#3 Hastur actually thinks that “Ciao” is the italian for “hen” (which doesn’t make much sense).

#4 In the official french subtitles, they once again completely changed the joke and Hastur thinks it’s the Chinese for “super”.
Bonus info: in the french book, Crowley says “bye” and Hastur tells Ligur it’s the English for “buy” (which works way better in my opinion).

#5 Aziraphale isn’t inviting Crowley over for “purely social” reasons but because he’s polite

#6 This iconic scene but in french and with Aziraphale getting a little bit more inventive to call Crowley.

#7 The french subs decided to make this more easy by just making Aziraphale calls Crowley “Satan”

#8 It’s only in the French sub but Aziraphale says “ça va être d’enfer” who could translate roughly to “ it’s going to be one **hell** of a great time” and I love it.

What is interesting to note there is that instead of saying “my darling boy” she sings “my angel, my darling” so Crowley knows damn well how sweet “my angel” is and still calls Aziraphale like this later in the show.

#10 French Crowley sadly only calls Aziraphale “my angel” once in the tv show (but all the time in the french book and subs). The other time he goes by “l’angelot” which translates literally to “the cherub”. But here’s a compilation of him calling Azi with french pet names:

#11 In the French subs, Crowley doesn't threaten to make Aziraphale disappear but asks Aziraphale to make himself disappear… wow

#12 Adam doesn’t name his dog with the French translation for Dog (Chien) but with the French translation for doggy/bow-wow : Toutou and I’m laughing so hard

#13 Crowley isn’t as cute when he says that he knows what Aziraphale smells like…

#14 Newt’s car isn’t called Dick Turpin but Jessie James in the french version. Dick Turpin isn’t a reference we french have so it makes senses here even though I’m still not sure I fully get the joke.

#15 They also translated in a literal way Agnes Nutter to Agnès Barge and Anathema Device’s to Anathème Bidule.

#16 “Grow Better” but poorly interpreted by the voice actor and weirdly translated to “keep growing” (biggest disappointment of the whole dub I think)

#17 Aziraphale describes the spooky feeling as something who gives you goosebumps and Crowley says that he “feels at home” when it’s scary. Is he talking about the bookshop? Because hell is definitively not his home.

#18 Aziraphale says that Crowley, even if he doesn't want to admit it, is a “nice boy” (gentil garçon) and my heart is melting.

#19 French Mary doesn’t break an intimate moment but “feels like she comes at a bad time” and ooh if you knew how much more accurate this is Mary…

#20 Crowley calling Aziraphale “mon ange” (my angel) really have a special place in my heart

#21 For french Aziraphale, it’s not tickety-boo but “ça gaze” which is an out of fashion expression but probably less old than tickety-boo…

#22 And in the subs he’s “au poil” (same thing)

#23 Here “aardvark” has been replaced by “warthog” which is equally weird so why not.

#24 I love how Aziraphale almost gets angry like “You made crepes??? And you didn’t invite me??? for CREPES???”

#25 Bastille scene but in french! I was really curious to see how they would handle the whole “Aziraphale poorly speaking french” part here and tbh I wasn’t expecting for this but this is smart!

#26 This one is really interesting. Here Crowley fears that everything “tourne en eau de boudin” (turn into blood sausage water - same meaning as pear-shaped but no literal equivalent in english) to which Aziraphale fondly answers he LOVES “boudin” (blood sausage). What is +

interesting there is that I didn’t know this expression so I made some research and the blood sausage in this very old french expression is a metaphor for... the penis. It’s not at all a common expression or one that would fit the time period they are in +

(it appeared in the XVI century). Plus, in the sub they use a more common expression using the world “vinegar” which would totally fit with the lip sync. So I can only assume it WAS intentional.

#27 The ambiguity of Aziraphale “you go too fast for me Crowley” is a bit less understandable here which is a shame since it’s a key point of their relationship...

#28 Crowley being rude to Aziraphale. Well, that is to say that our angel is really dumb here...

#29 Crowley getting rude once again but with the great plan and being even more inventive than in English!

#30 That’s the part in the french trailer which convinced me to watch Good Omens with the french dub bc this one is really neat!

#31 French Aziraphale isn’t soft, he’s just not a warrior

#33 The joke changes here. It’s not about avocados but almonds. And Armageddon is the end of the almonds somehow… I have to admit I don’t quite get the joke here. Maybe that “amandes” sounds like “monde” (world) so it’s like the end of the world?

#34 In the french sub they managed to keep the avocados AND make an actually funny and easily-understandable pun with the “Avocalypse”

#35 Warlock being even more of a brat by telling Hastur he smells like SHIT. Though it’s pretty clever since “sentir la merde” in french also means “you sucks” so very very well done!

#36 Interesting fact but in the french version, God is both referred to with he/him and she/her pronouns by Aziraphale who only refers to God with “she” pronouns in the original version.

#37 French random guy here tries to comfort Aziraphale by saying that there are many other fishes in the sea (1 lost, 10 found if I translate it literally). Only he doesn’t know there is only one cute snake…

#38 “So long sucker” but it’s “see you loser” with less of acting flavor

#44 In french we don’t say “to get a bit of a wiggle-on” but “il va falloir qu’on se remue les fesses” (we will have to move our asses) and I think it’s beautiful

#54 And here we are, that one time the french dub is more accurate to the book than the official english show. Because in the book, the goal is not to know if the great plan is the ineffable one too or not. It is to make Heaven and Hell BELIEVE it’s not the same thing. And they +

got it perfectly in the french dub with this line. That’s also what tells me that the person who translated it probably was a fan of Good Omens or at least were so invested in their work that they did research about it beforehand.

#57 I’m not going to lie but Good Omens french dub isn’t really the best dub I’ve heard. Of course it’s not bad either and you ultimately get used to it but I feel like the quality of the voice acting isn’t always at its best. But I have to admit that they made an extra effort +

and really impressed me when they changed their tone of voices to hint at the body swapping and this is really much appreciated.
