More on this news; the affected group will possibly reach Dunai, the district headquarter, Dolpa soon. #genderviolence http://yohokhabar.com/news/details/MjA0MjE=?fbclid=IwAR2qrAD89ocso1fD7nTo4ag-ZXBzWKQkqlnn60KQRzsjbNZ_Vb6w43XkbK0
Within the next two hours, they will reach Dunai hoping meanwhile they will get justice. As per my experience, they walked more than 20 hours to reach Dunai. Yes, that's how far the district headquarters creating different forms of spatial segregation and structural violence.
Meanwhile, the chairperson, who is now accused of committing the attack on his community members has poor records of corruption and manipulation. Based on what I've heard (multiple views) and what I've experienced again at the time of last local election, he's def ain't a saint.
Obv. his presence and action need to contextualize in a certain space where the neocolonial network and effect is pervasive for many yrs. The colonized minds obey his 'Bahun' masters but use certain performance to oppress community members including women.
There's a different form of 'pedagogy of oppressed' in play here and one cannot fail to see the absurdity of electoral democracy, which reproduces such toxicity at the local level.
I forgot to mention that the chairperson ordered a helicopter overnight and reached Dunai after failing to convince his community members to settle the issue. And in Dunai, he shared his story and photos while reporting the incident in the police station. +
Yes, he perhaps knew his position and where he stands in Dunai. And no he didn't stop there. Accusing community members, he tried his best to use multiple media to narrate his story and how he was attacked. Trust me, no community members will attack +
the *powerful man, who has everything under his sleeve including the social and political capital interlinked with lowlands politicians and oligarchs.
Interestingly, some community members have come to know another issue linked with his power abuse, which could finally destroy his political career. Let's see though how this encounter will unfold. Obv. I'm glad that people are still fighting after years of suppression.
and different ways to deal with this *monster. 👊✊
Oh yeah if this pandemic allows, I'd be there next year for my 1-yr ethnography trying to learn more abt such social formations. N I don't care even if some of his goons try to threaten me+my research. I've my ancestors n kins in d community still to take proper care of me. 🌾🙃
finally, they've reached Dunai after 24 hours of walk. Meanwhile, in the midway at Lesicyap, they were nearly attacked by few relatives of the chairperson. Here's the short video detailing that incident https://www.facebook.com/100009609229541/videos/2602977770032505/
Here's the news24 reporting the incident https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=_kcMVh8P9vY
the main 'sutkeri' woman and her mother-in-law demanding justice and asking for safety (14:35-18:35); the chairperson (the anchor gets his name wrong) defending himself while claiming he was there to stop the fight (28:35-32:00); Suresh Sunar, the chief district officer didn't +
appear saying he don't want to say anything now (30:00-32:00); DSP Raju Pandey (49:13-51:38) claims certain knowledge n attempts to normalize the situation even wrongly categorizes the incident but stresses on the investigation when the anchor asks if such incident can be +
+ labeled as 'samanya' (normal). Kudos to the anchor for fiercely questioning both the chairperson and the DSP and their attempts to normalize while maintaining patience with the first speakers and some technical glitches. @News24Nepal #SidhaKuraJanataSanga #CALL24
forgot to indicate that the DSP also mispronounced the name 'Tsarka Tangshyong' indicative of Mahendra nationalism. Not to forget, most of these security officials are recruited from the upper-caste groups, prefer a non-indigenous language, and stationed in these rural areas.
Thou he has signed this statement released on the rural municipality's letter pad, I know tht he hasn't written this statement. Yes, there're few good Nepali lang (non-indigenous) writers in Dolpo but not in this particular region. My first guess is a lawyer from the lowland.
Within a day, the chairperson, it seems, has succeeded to settle the case with the injured woman after his agreement to provide her medical expenses, extra money for her travel, and seek 'maafi' (forgiveness). The woman is also worried about a child who she believes might fall+
sick especially if the court case takes a long duration to address the case. Most of the community people gen perceive the judiciary as time-, money-, and energy-consuming. Plus the Nepali lang, Nepali judge, and the Nepali lawyer in non-indigenous spaces rarely help. +
and possibly without any support, she has to stay in Dunai, the district headquarter where the district court and the lawyer are located but at-least two days walking distance far from her community. Such conditions never assist her access to justice but contribute to allowing +
the perpetrator without any cases charged and often ways to further control the community members.
Anyways, some community members are trying their best to move forward with the court case even without the injured woman now on their side. Btw, the case is already weakened.
N this settlement was done, acc. to some locals, under d purview of a gov. official n a lowland politician. This gang have indirectly threatened locals not to speak publicly about such an arrangement. But like I indicated b4, some locals including more than 20 youths are +
trying their best to move forward with the court case involving the conflict and the corruption charge.
In this maneuver, we need to know that the region I'm talking abt is loosely controlled by the Nepal Communist Party and its district chapter. The lowland politicians don't want to untie that hold resulting in d complete support to the chairman. Nepali Congress is non-existent.
