Haikyuu exhibition 2020

So I have to give my address (for covid purposes) and I’m in the lobby area AND THEY HAVE ALL THE BANNERS UP IN LIFE SIZE IM JUST SHAKING A LITTLE BIT???

LIKE THE INARIZAKI AND THE KAMOMEDAI AND DATEKOU SBDHAKAKS IM ALREADY EMOTIONAL

Okay so once I went in the exhibition had the promo art printed really big! A very nice opening to the exhibition

There was a small summary of the story and all that copyright stuff to the right and then BAM they start with the “if you’re the king that rules the court. I’ll defeat you and stand at the top of the court”

Me already trying not to die.

Then at the start of the first passage are BIG printed image of each main karasuno member (when I say big ...like floor to ceiling) and each section has a sort profile and their stats and then two double spread features I think they were all the first appearances)

I found that compared to the last exhibition there were a lot less coloured illustrations! But they picked about 1 colour illustration from each arc to display

So as indicated on the website the exhibition is divided into matches. From 3v3, seijo practice match, vs dateko etc

They really went all out on the display. Each part had a big backing boards with blown up manga panels and a theme colour depending on the team

The part with Asahi’s dateko block breakthrough they blew it up BIG and made like a 3D version of a wall crumbling it was SOO good

An observation is Furudate going from “let me draw the WHOLE bottom of the vball shoes” to “hehe outline of shoe” I love that

All the manuscripts are some kind of B size so they’re a little bigger than A3 ITS SO NICE TO SEE ALL THE LITTLE DETAILS

And Ofc by the bj/msby match what you see in the manga is what you get ITS SO CRAZY CLEAN like just some toning instructions here and there and that’s all

Okay so the one display that absolutely destroyed me was after karasuno wins against shiratorizawa and there’s the page of The third years hugging

THat got it WHOLE OWN SET UP

It was blown up REALLY BIG as a background to the manuscript and then the were led lights around the edges lighting it up AND IT TOOK MY WHOLE BEING TO NOT CRY

ALSO ALSO ALSO!! THE COVER FOR THE SHIRATORIZAWA ISNT FUUDATES REGULAR COPICS??? very textured paper and I don’t think it was watercolour my hunch was acrylic paint??? Very thick and textured has a breakdown over that

I love looking at Furudate’s coloured works becuase of the way he uses copics and I’m super impressed at printing for flyers and poster the visuals for the exhibition!! It literally is the exact same colour!! they did a good job

(They were all draw desperately and edited together and I want to say Futakuchi is VERY unfairly handsome)

The last exhibition went up to “once in a blue moon tsukishima kei” And I ALSO HAD TO CONTROL MYSELF AT TSUKIYAMS HIGH FIVE LET ME JUST - COMBUST

I mean I’ve seen it but seeing it again killed me

SEEING THE NEKOMA MATCH AND KAGEYAMA SHOUTING “OPEN” and tossing he ball way up high!!! The cage breaking page !!!

Oh god and I realised how DEAD Kenma’s eyes were when he said he was sad to see Hinata not interesting anymore

Also finally noticing the panelling a lot more at the climax we get a LOT of angles that will be VERY close to the net (usually looking upwards) but you never see the other side UNTIL BAM NEXT PAG and I just -

I LOVE how they displayed the moment Atsumu fell for Hinata when he’s on the balcony like “what’s that thing”

Ask I’m sti trying to figure out if Furudate has a big artist’s to draw the ceiling of the orange court???? It’s so detailed I’m like ??? THIS IS DRAWN BY HUMAN HAND???

So at the end of the nekoma/karasuno match before it moves to mujinazaka vs fukurodanbj they printed that “thank you for teaching me how to play volleyball” panel of Kenma REALLY BIG AND I CRIED THERE

Hey had the sashimono (like the vertical flags) for nekoma, fukurodani and itachitama as well before you went up to the second floor!! WANTED TK TAKE A PHOTO SO BAD

One thing was I tried not to cry becuase 1) I would get in the way of other people and 2) I was wearing a mask and I didn’t want it getting wet BDBSKAJSBSA SO CUE ME STANDING ASIDE TO SUCK MY TEARS BACK INTOMY EYEBALLS

SAW THE SAN JUAN OIKAWA JN PERSON TOO YO BITCH ALL WATERCOLOUR I WAS GONNA PUNCH THE FRAME /s

Also the Brazil Hinata too AHHHHH (Oikawa isn’t actually part of that image they just edited it together for the calendar)

The set up they have for the twins though....they put the final scene with the twins quick and kagehi block and Tsukkis speech all on one wall, blew Atsumu and Osamu up real big to frame it

Also every time I see the Inarizaki vs Karasuno coloured inage I’m so in awe of all the little details it’s so inspiring and I really hope to be able to draw fullcoloured images like that one day in traditional!

I wish they had at least a little photospot where we could take photos but I also think they didn’t have one becuase people would crowd up

This was the bonus clearcardfor the preveiw day! Comes with a stand to display it

I think that was most of it!! I will add anything else I remember to this thread! (I’ll also be going a few more times so will add additional thoughts here)

Press articles have photos!!! The vertical banners and the inarizaki arc set up!!! They’re so beautiful ahhh

Okay last time I was lining up very close to the entrance but I didn’t see the shiratorizawa, fukurodani and itachitayama flags as well shdbakajs ahhh

Ohhh they changed it so you can’t use your phone and type while you’re inside (I used notes on my phone and made notes)

Mnnng guess I’ll bring pencil and paper next time

So when I was looking at my own pace and arrived at the second seijo match area I was looking at a piece and there was a lady’s and a man standing next to me looking at the first manuscript (I was waiting for them to leave to see the one they werr looking at)

Both of them were maybe in their 50s and I listened to the lady just speak so fast about the composition of the page and and pointing at parts saying“Oikawa-san” over and over again and at one point she stopped and was like “oh my goodness I’m so sorry for talking so much...

And she paused and started sobbing and the man was like “oh no it’s okay!!!” And I think she walked aside to compose herself SJSVSBAKHW that would be me tbh

And it makes me laugh how scrunched up the paper is for the seijo (volume 17) illustration is....you can tell the paper has been handled. A LOT

Part of me wished there was a page with Kita and Kita granny but I know inarizaki’s main even is the twins so....AT LEASE WE GOT THE GOOD KITADAI BANNER MOMENT

I was thinking since it hit the banner it must have been a reasonably strong spike too???? DAICHI

Today’s clearcard was TanaNoya!!! FUSIONNNN

I’ll type a few more thoughts from today too!

I found more tiny hinagarasu’s in the manuscripts!!! The first time I was like huh, there weren’t many but thatwas just becuase I wasn’t looking hard enough

And I noticed that Furudate stopped crosshatching eyes a little before the shiratorizawa match and they were really only saved for when he wanted emphasis on the eyes and his lines were less scratchy and had more varying line weights instead.

There’s a few pages from the first practice match with seijo and I always laugh at oikawa becuase .. who are you.

Also I appreciate the monologue/narration boxes being slightly semi-opaque so you can still see a little bit of the full art underneath!! It’s so neat and I think all manga should be like this (I’m kidding)

ANYWAY I stillforget how DAMN BIG the manuscripts are and there’s just something that stirs deep in my chest when I see “who will you become tomorrow?” Page with hinatas face bigger than the size of my hand. it’s literally THAT BIG. It really hits so differently

Got the same feeling seeing “what more do you need than pride” like it hit me just how big the page was.....(and YamaTsuki high five...)

I also tried to pay more attention to the layout of the exhibition and the backing walls?? All of them are so well thought out and each has a good theme colour. But damn there was one wall with the nekoma haruko match

With Kenma “caging” Hinata And they printed kenmas face REALLY big and put big 3D black lines all the way down the wall to make emulate a cage and I think that’s my favourite set up they did

I would draw it but I’m lazy... but they also printed up some panels big to put on the wall to lead up to and give context for pages that were displayed

They even blew up the “this worthless pride of mine” to put at the end of seijo match as a nice way to lead into the shiratorizawa section (also I noticed Ushijima was like ...? WHY IS USHIJIMA SO CUTE)

I think my fave piece in the exhibition is STILL THE SHIRATORIZAWA ACRYLIC PAINT PIECE. I wish they picked more pieces that used a range of media to show off Furudate skills a little (he uses GLITTERY GOLD ACRYLIC FOR KAGEYAMA AND HINATA KING PIECES PLEASE WHY NOT SHOW THAT)
