making a thread rating various media ive revisited or new media i have experienced for the first time since quarantine, will continually update every day-ish

as far as shows and games ill keep everything spoiler free but music and other things are fair game, just a heads up

this album came out at the beginning of 2018, my sophomore year! so i took some time recently to listen to it again without the cloudy fanboy mindset (which don’t get me wrong, i love fall out boy) and it sounds-

-much different to me. as an album its kind of messy, tbh a lot of songs dont necessarily flow well together and while overall the songs can stand alone well it’s hard to justify it as a stable piece of work.
πš–πšŠπš—πš’πšŠ πš‹πš’ πšπšŠπš•πš• 𝚘𝚞𝚝 πš‹πš˜πš’ (revisit pt3)

that’s not to discredit the songs at all- tbh, some, if not most of these have some of the most clever writing ive heard from fob since folie a deux. ill go over the songs individually next.

stay frosty royal milk tea is honestly the weakest track. it’s a fine opener, but its just kind of another stadium anthem, even if the writing is better than that of their previous ones. it’s boring & i rly dont enjoy it much.
πš–πšŠπš—πš’πšŠ πš‹πš’ πšπšŠπš•πš• 𝚘𝚞𝚝 πš‹πš˜πš’ (revisit pt5)

the last of the real ones is cool, its reminiscent of sr&r but with a very colorful coat of paint and a more groove-worthy attitude. hold me tight or dont is where things start to pick up a bit. the driving latin groove actu-

-ally doesn’t feel all too off-kilter or culturally washed. it pays a decent amount of respect to the cultural origins without taking it away while still having a stable white boy pop feel. it’s a solid song but nothing more.
πš–πšŠπš—πš’πšŠ πš‹πš’ πšπšŠπš•πš• 𝚘𝚞𝚝 πš‹πš˜πš’ (revisit pt7)

wilson is arguably one of the strongest tracks, this is where the lyrics harken back to older fall out boy. on top of it all is one of the best instrumentals and vocal performances from post-hiatus fob. i love this song tbh a-

-nd i need more like it. church and heavens gate are a bit similar but follow right after one another and are absolutely stellar! they give a great, colorful sense of the direction fall out boy heads going forward and are irr-

-esistibly catchy with an amazing texture to them. it’s an overwhelming one-two punch. champion is another fob stadium anthem, but its much better than sfrmt and does its job well. weaker than the rest of the album but good o-

-verall. sunshine riptide is another contender for the best song from the album, this shit slaps LMAO. burna boy’s feature is fantastic and the song is very ghastly and pale in a great way. it’s cryptic, but groovy. this nex-

-t take might get me flack, but young and menace is really good. it’s a very, very bold song but it is amazingly composed, and the dynamic between the hook and the rest of the song is done super super well. it feels dark and-

-conflicting, and the lyrics reflect that too. the instrumental behind the hook blends surprisingly effectively for a song that’s so jagged, black, and violent. bishops knife trick, while not the best song off mania, is defi-

-nitely the most interesting. there’s a phantasmic, ethereal quality and texture to the song that is a bit out of place for fall out boy and pop in general, but it really makes the song. it’s mysterious and it almost sounds-

-chemical. the structure of the song is just fine, and what tops it off is the eerie lyrics that imply a story of last hurrahs. it’s probably the favorite to my various synesthesia. and finally, ill give my scores.

like i said, although as an album it’s messy and doesn’t flow that well, most of the songs are great in their own right! mania has its peaks as well. the one-two punch of church + heavens gate is easily the highlight, and th-

-e build up to the end of the album (tracks 6-9) is relatively stable and does an alright job of carrying you to bishops. it’s definitely the weakest fall out boy album but also one of the most interesting. ty for reading (:
