Covid19 deaths vs. Suicides in DuPage County Illinois.
I wanted to see what kind of 'life years' that both Covid19 and Suicides have taken this year. My data comes from the IDPH, the Dupage County Coroner and I used the World Bank 'Life Expectancy' for the US. (78.54 years)
Assumptions that needed to be made:
Exact ages are not known and deaths are listed in ten year groups. To make a rough calculation possible I ran everyone's age as if they were in the middle of that age group. (25 years old, 35, etc.)
Everyone listed in the age groups '80+' have been excluded. Their passing, while always tragic, does not reflect someone who has 'died young'. Might they have lived another 20 years? Sure, but that involves conjecture and I don't believe that helps the discussion. Let's see.
DuPage has had 207 Covid deaths (victims below the age of 80) and 50 suicides in the same age range. Now the coroner reported that suicides were up 22% and they are. 44 suicides were recorded over the same time in FY 2019.
You may say, "that's only 6 people" but lets look on..
Let's look at the number of years 'taken' from society by both events and lets do it by age group, side by side.
Covid deaths under 19 - 0
Suicides under 19 -1
Accepting the 22% premise, that's an ADDITIONAL loss of 7.14 life years for just this county... for our teens.
Covid deaths 20-29 - 0
Suicides - 11 Total life years lost 588.94
Life years lost due to lockdown in this age group, 70.68.

Covid deaths 30-39 - 5 Life years lost 217.7
Suicides - 6 Total life years 261.24. Additional lost due to Covid lockdown 31.34
Covid deaths aged 40-49 - 9 - 301.86 Life years lost.
Suicides - 9 Total years lost 301.86 - Additional lost due to Covid lockdown 36.22

Covid deaths 50-59 - 22 - 517.88 life years lost
Suicides - 10 Total life years lost 235.4 - Additional due to Covid lockdown 28.25
Covid deaths aged 60-69 - 50 - 677 life years lost.
Suicides - 9 Total life years lost 121.86 Additional lost 14.62

Covid deaths 70-79 - 121 - 428.34 Life years lost.
Suicides - 5 Total life years lost 17.7 Additional lost due to Covid lockdown - 2.13
Total ADDITIONAL life years lost to suicide for people under 30 - 77.8 years
Total for Covid for people under 30 - 0
Nobody in my county under 30 has died. Add in the under 40's, 5 have died.
The INCREASE in suicides was 6...
You might think it's cold to break things down into numbers... but I believe it helps some (especially me) validate what we have been seeing. The young are bearing a great burden that will ONLY get worse with the approach of winter.
Now the question : Was it 'right' to trade those 6 extra lives to attempt to slow the virus spread?
I have been bombarded by people who say 'What if your loved one had died from Covid?'
Now I ask, what if your loved one took their own life because of our lockdown?
I'm probably too close to this to see everything objectively. I've been too close to the psychological emergencies. They take a toll that extends far beyond what I've listed.
Remember that these numbers don't include overdose deaths.
They don't include those who don't seek treatment for other ailments because they were made to be afraid.

There's no formula to calculate that. There's no charts or graphs or spreadsheets that will EVER show these losses.

So why did I type this thread...?
So why did I type this thread...?
I'm tired. We started ignoring individual liberties and that's what scares me. More than Covid ever has or will.
