1/ IMPORTANT: I've been pitching this "crisis within a crisis" for 3 weeks and the response is encouraging. Essentially, there's a crisis within a crisis with #NativeAmerican #DomesticViolence survivors right now who are in compounded danger. [THREAD] #DV #IndigenousPeoples
2/ #Native peoples and #AlaskaNatives are disproportionately affected by both domestic violence and #COVID19 *AND* the #pandemic has increased the instances and severity of domestic violence cases.
3/ As reported by the Radiological Society of North America @RSNA last month, lockdowns during the pandemic have contributed to increased rates and severity of domestic violence across the country and many victims are trapped for longer hours with their abusers. #radiology
4/ Indian Country includes an estimated 6.79 million people from 573 federally recognized tribes and these individuals experience domestic violence at *much higher* rates.
Another recent study cited by @CDCgov found that Native Americans are diagnosed w/COVID-19 at a rate 3.5x.
5/ According to the National Institute of Justice @OJPNIJ more than 1 in 2 Native women (55.5%) and 1 in 3 Native men (43.2%) have experienced physical violence by intimate partners. This is shocking/urgent enough before you look at the disparity in local resources.
6/ The good news is @StrongHeartsDV is a national, culturally-appropriate helpline scaling up to help. They just released their "Resource Disparity Summary" https://www.strongheartshelpline.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/2020-09-01-sh-resources-onepager.pdf which shows despite the prevalence of intimate partner violence across Indian Country:
7/🐢Out of 1,601 shelters in the U.S., only 57 are current active Native shelters;
🐢Out of 3,909 total providers in the U.S., only 266 are current active Native providers;
🐢More than 1 in 3 Native female victims and 1 in 6 Native male victims report unmet service needs.
8/ So, what can you do to support the original and ongoing stewards of this land?
